Clinton and the Feminists

For many Jewish women, the feminist movement has been the key political event of our lifetimes. It has given us role models, women of great personal power and intellectual agility, and allowed us to venture into unprecedented careers and lifestyles.Arguably, the reason so many Jewish women were drawn to feminism is that it articulated the dream of personal freedom and the mandate of political activism contained within our own spiritual tradition, the pursuit of tikkun olam.\n

How Do We Do It?

I\’ve been a single parent a long time now. I knowa lot about it. When Jewish organizations need a speaker on single parenting, they often ask me — and I\’ll be at the Westside Jewish Community Center this Sunday for the daylong conference, \”Creating Family Life as a Single Parent,\” sponsored by Jewish Family Service\’s new Jewish Single Parent Network (818-762-8800.)\n

A Woman’s Voice

Stop the presses: The Jewish communityis ready to discover…singles. That\’s right. What intermarriage and\”continuity\” were to the 1990s, singles will be in the years ahead: agroup to study, court, serve and, finally, value.

The Thirteen Wants

What can American-style liberalJudaism offer Israel? After the battle over the proposed conversionbill is settled, that question will remain. We can puff up our chestsand demand equality with Orthodoxy over who is a Jew. But,inevitably, every political victory in the Knesset will beshort-lived unless we find a way to talk to Israeli Jews about theirown lives.

Music to My Ears

Just when I thought the whole Jewishcommunity had swung to the right, I visited with lyricists Alan andMarilyn Bergman; it was music to my ears. This songwriting pair movesseamlessly from show business to activism, having won three Oscars, two Grammys and three Emmys for songs such as \”The Way We Were,\”\”Windmills of Your Mind\” and the score for \”Queen of the StardustBallroom\” while playing a strong behind-the-scenes role in nationalDemocratic Party politics. They take nothing for granted — not ahumane political climate, nor even each other. After 39 years ofmarriage, Alan, tall and dapper, instinctively rises to meet hiselegant partner\’s entrance into the room; he regards her kiss as agift, a pleasant surprise.

A Legendary Friendship

Linda Deutsch and Theo Wilson liveda cross the street from each other for most of the past 21 years. They were trial reporters who met in the Charles Manson courtroom, competitors and best friends. On Jan. 17, Wilson called Deutsch four times while anxiously awaiting the limo that was to take her from her Hollywood Hills home to a CBS interview — the official start ofpromotion for her new book, \”Headline Justice,\” which had taken her 10 years to complete.

Back of the Bus

True story. Last week at the Westside Pavilion, just\noutside Nordstrom, six women, dressed in the garb of\nIslam, were standing by the mall\’s ATM. Four wore\ncolorful scarves, exposing the face and a bit of hair; two\nwere completely in black, with only small slits, 1 inch by\n4 inches, revealing huge, dark eyes. From a distance, the\nhuman form disguised, they looked like a gathering of\nwrens.

A Perfect Orange

In addition to the usual bathing suits, socks and shorts, as suggested by Camp Hess Kramer on its inventory list, my daughter, Samantha, needed an orange sweat shirt with blue (preferably royal) lettering\nspelling out the words \”Leadership \’97\” on the front and her name on the back. Right away, I could foresee trouble.
