Showing Solidarity

Back in October, 60 UCLA students learned that over winter break they would be going on the trip of a lifetime. They had been chosen from among hundreds of applicants to take part, virtually for free, in UCLA Hillel\’s Birthright Israel contingent. The Birthright program brings thousands of Jewish students to Israel for 10-day tours that encourage them to discover their own Jewish identity. The 1999 trip had received glowing reviews. But in December 2000, one-third of the UCLA slots were suddenly up for grabs.

Downward Trend

Tour operator Tova Gilead returned from a 10-day trip to Israel in early January and brought back wonderful stories of people experiencing the beauty and history of the Holy Land, many for the first time.

Israel All to Yourself

I was more than a little conflicted when Israel\’s Ministry of Tourism invited me to visit the Holy Land for one week in December to judge for myself whether the country was safe enough for tourists. I\’d never traveled to Israel before, and while I knew that life was going on as usual for most Israelis, CNN\’s daily images of conflict and the U.S. State Department\’s warning fed my apprehension.

Help Wanted

\nAmerican Jews are letting down Israel in the short run by staying away during the current unrest, says a top Progressive rabbi, and in the long run by not fighting harder for religious pluralism in the Jewish state.

Tourism in Israel

Ehud Barak has the hardest job in Israel these days, but Itai Eiges\’ is no walk in the park, either. As director general of the ministry of tourism, Eiges is in charge of promoting an industry that has been crippled by the recent conflict. Tour operators are reporting a 50 percent cancellation rate, the U.S. State Department has instituted a travel warning on the Middle East, and Britain has levied one against Jerusalem. It is the worst drop-off in travel in decades.

Missions: Impossible

Many American Jewish travelers, including Angelenos, are thinking twice about visiting Israel. And this trend, at least in the short term, is affecting the travel business, especially agencies dependent on a high volume of tickets and tour packages to Israel.

My German Question

Until last year, I held firm to that tribalist impulse familiar to many American Jews and refused to visit Germany (or fly Lufthansa or buy German products, etc.). Although no members of my immediate family had fallen victim to the Nazi terror, the resistance to things German was passed on from my parents\’ generation, which shared in the belated outrage (and desire to expunge feelings of inadequacy) of postwar American Jewry.

Of Course

I had been to Israel before and was on my way there again. I had gotten this \”of course\” business before, from store clerks, bellboys, even strangers on the street, and it didn\’t seem to matter whether or not my question was a stupid one.

What They Did for Love

The Los Angeles Ulpan is one of the nation\’s oldest Israel trips geared to teenagers.
