Syrian security forces opened fire on demonstrations Friday in the capital Damascus and the coastal city of Latakia – the heartland the ruling elite – wounding at least five people as thousands took to the streets in several places across the country, witnesses said.

Presidents Conference’s Hoenlein, Assad meet in Damascus

Malcolm Hoenlein, the executive vice president of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, met with Syrian President Bashar Assad in Damascus. Hoenlein said the meeting Monday was at the invitation of Syria and not, as had been reported originally by the Israeli media, at the behest of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. \”I went to Damascus on an important humanitarian issue to the Jewish people,\” Hoenlein told Haaretz. \”Netanyahu did not ask anything from me, and any attempt to link me to the diplomatic process with Syrian is manipulation.\”

Attack Forces Israel to Strike at Syria

This week\’s Israeli airstrike on an Islamic Jihad training camp near Damascus, which followed the group\’s deadly suicide bombing in Haifa on Saturday, was a sign to the Arab world that Israel will not be constrained by borders when it comes to the war on terrorism.

The attack came hours before the 30th anniversary of the Yom Kippur War, when Israel was blindsided by Syria and Egypt.
