Adam Wolf, a 12-year-old with cerebral palsy, was stunned when Randi Grossman, West Coast director of the Chai Lifeline, called to tell him that the organization would pay for him to go to the Super Bowl.
More than 300 people attending the annual candle-lighting and Chanukah celebration at the JCC at Milken on Dec. 22 witnessed what many consider an extra miracle: the announcement that the JCC is seeking bids on the work necessary to reopen its Olympic-size pool.
A young boy with a serious illness was a big football fan. So Grossman, Usdan and the staff made some calls and found someone to donate two Super Bowl tickets, and someone else to sponsor the trip. When the boy found out about the trip, his parents said it was \”the first time he smiled since getting his diagnosis.\”
Last August, Lori Paulsen\’s 4-year-old son, Aaron, was diagnosed with Wilms\’ tumor, a rare form of kidney cancer. Soon afterward, a friend offered to call Chai Lifeline on her behalf.
The Jewish Community Foundation awarded a $7,500 grant to the Access Center of OPCC (formerly the Ocean Park Community Center). The money will be dedicated to maintaining the project\’s critical core programs to assist homeless youth, adults and families.
Talia Hill, 11, was born with cerebral palsy, epilepsy and bone deformities. She is hearing impaired, speech impaired, mobility impaired, fine-motor impaired and neither her two arms nor her two legs are the same length. In her short life, she has had multiple surgeries, a hearing aid and has had to take several kinds of medication on a regular basis.
