Again Israel turns to mourning the dead, but this time the list of those killed has been slow in coming. As the bombs used in suicide bombings become more sophisticated, producing deadlier and deadlier blasts, it takes more time to identify the remains of the dead.

\”How will I find anyone alive?\” the 21-year-old security guard asked as he broke down the door and climbed onto the charred ruins of bus no. 19, stepping over body parts and choking on the smell of burned flesh.

Menorah Lights Our Way

For three years, I lived in an apartment in Jerusalem next to a bus stop. The rhythm of my life quickly adapted to the bus schedule. Just by looking out my bedroom window, I knew exactly when to leave the house in order to catch the bus.

When I returned to California, I assumed my life\’s association with buses would end. But this was not to be. I live in a neighborhood where buses abound. And they\’re just as loud as those of Jerusalem. But the associations couldn\’t be more different.

True story. Last week at the Westside Pavilion, just\noutside Nordstrom, six women, dressed in the garb of\nIslam, were standing by the mall\’s ATM. Four wore\ncolorful scarves, exposing the face and a bit of hair; two\nwere completely in black, with only small slits, 1 inch by\n4 inches, revealing huge, dark eyes. From a distance, the\nhuman form disguised, they looked like a gathering of\nwrens.
