New Sculptures Debuted

Sculptures by two prominent local artists are now on permanent display.

The Art of Memory

Artist Tobi Kahn is obsessed with memories of the Holocaust. His abstract landscapes depict recollections of a haunted time and place he never experienced. Simple shapes conjure rivers and roads that snake through still valleys, serene at first glance, disturbing upon reflection. Mountain peaks thrust from brooding waters, in a palette of muted browns, golds and blues. Almost always, the paintings are devoid of people. \”Sky and water always stay the same,\” Kahn says, \”no matter how well- or ill-behaved we are.\”

L.A. Culture: Alive and Well

What is going on at the LA County Museum of Art? The museum\’s new Institute for Art and Cultures, which convenes painters, poets, artists and performers, writers and thinkers to \”address critical issues in the visual arts and culture through rigorous and playful discussions, performances and debates,\” has landed in our midst and overnight become a central presence. The Institute also happens to be reminding the rest of us that LA Culture exits.

A Natural History

It is a rainy day at the Jack Rutberg Fine Arts gallery on La Brea, but Ruth Weisberg, the artist and art educator, is gazing at a painting where it is perpetually summer.

Raising Eyebrows

It\’s not always easy to contend with an artist who decides to bite the hand that feeds him.

Russian Artists on Display

It\’s common knowledge that the Jewish exodus from Russia in the late 1980s brought to Israel a flood of talented artists and musicians.

The Arts

When thecolumnist and author Jack Newfield started work on his documentaryabout Robert F. Kennedy, his mind was rooted as much in the presentas it was in the past. Yes, a large part of the purpose of thethree-hour special, \”Robert F. Kennedy: A Memoir\” (Discovery Channel,Sunday, June 7, 8 p.m.), was to commemorate and honor the latesenator on the 30th anniversary of his assassination.

Three’s Company

Perli Pelzig first knew he had talent at the ageof 5, when he would chalk life-size figures of animals on thesidewalks in his native Germany. These figures attracted attentionfrom passers-by, and, not long after, Pelzig was named \”wunderkind\”for his dazzling artistic capabilities.

Endangered Species

Rachel Rosenthal, her bald pate gleaming withsweat and her stark features grooved like gashes in alabaster, lookslike a female Erich von Stroheim — who, let\’s face it, could himselfhave been a woman in drag. Short, stubby, Teutonic, and with the kindof wracked expression one imagines Rimbaud wore after his season inhell, she could just as easily be the commandant of a Nazi death campas the most senior and compelling Performance Artist inCalifornia.
