Jewish Journal Wins Two LA Press Club Awards and Several Other Honors

The Jewish Journal of Greater Los Angeles took home several honors at the 65th annual Los Angeles Press Club Awards on Sunday.

Editor-in-Chief David Suissa won first place in two categories.

Suissa won for Best Columnist for a newspaper with under 50K with his piece, “Can we fight antisemitism without losing our sense of humor?” Comment from Press Club: “This is a great topic, exhibiting clear writing and making important points.”

He also won best Entertainment News or Feature for his piece, The Fabelmans’: Steven Spielberg’s Antidote to Jewish Victimhood.” Comment: “The lead and the topic were insightful and on point.”

Suissa received runner-up honors for best Personality Profile for his piece, “Mark Schiff: Laughs from the Heart,” and 2nd place for Commentary for his cover story, “Why Was There No Warp Speed for Therapeutics?

Tabby Refael won runner-up honors for Best Columnist for her piece, “Want to Be Pro-Israel? Support Iranians.”

The Journal also had finalists in several categories:

Humor/Satire Writing:  Tabby Refael, “If the Pilgrims Had Been Jewish

Best Travel Reporting: Lisa Niver, “Joshua Tree National Park: My First Visit!

Best Educational Reporting: Debra Eckerling, “YULA Boys High School Students Buy Their Teacher a Car

Personality Profile/Interview, Non-Entertainment Personalities, over 10 minutes: Lisa Niver, “Make Your Own Map Podcast” episode, “Deepak Chopra on the Divine Feminine and World Meditation Day.”

In total, the Journal had eight nominations, three runner-up awards and two winners.

The event at the Crystal Ballroom in the Millennium Biltmore Hotel also featured several prominent names with honorary awards. Among them, Bernard-Henri Lévy was awarded The Daniel Pearl Award for Courage and Integrity in Journalism. The award was presented by Daniel’s father, Judea Pearl.
