Canadian Jewish Group Urges Government to Label Iranian Guard Corps as Terrorists

On January 13, B’nai Brith Canada called on the Canadian government to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organization.

The Canadian Jewish group’s CEO, Michael Mostyn, said at a press conference, “Our government is now on notice. We are asking for the IRGC to be designated as a terrorist group in Canada within the next 30 days. No further delays will be accepted by Canadians on this important public safety issue.”

He also pointed out the House of Commons unanimously passed a motion in June 2018 calling for the Canadian government to designate the IRGC as a terror group; the government has not followed through on the motion.

“Why has this designation not yet occurred when it is the clearly expressed will of Parliament?” Mostyn asked.

B’nai Brith Canada’s national senior legal counsel, David Matas, pointed out the Canadian government currently has the Quds Force – an arm of the IRGC – labeled as a terror organization, but not the IRGC as a whole.

“Canada has rightly rejected that approach when it comes to other terrorist groups, such as Hezbollah and Hamas,” Matas said. “Any funds sent to the IRGC from Canada – which remains legal today – could be used to assist the Quds Force in carrying out acts of terrorism.”

The Iranian government admitted to shooting down a Ukrainian plane on January 8, killing 176 people. Fifty-six of the victims were Canadians. Iran is claiming the downing of the plane was accidental. Matas argued that designating the entire IRGC as a terror organization would allow Canadians who lost family members to sue the Iranian government for compensation.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters on January 12 he was infuriated over Iran’s downing of the plane. He added he would consider designating the entire IRGC as a terror group.

Brooklyn Nets Warm Up in ‘No Place For Hate’ Shirts with Anti-Defamation League Logo

(JTA) — The Brooklyn Nets warmed up in shirts that read “No Place For Hate” and bore the logo of the Anti-Defamation League on Sunday night, before a game against the Atlanta Hawks at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

“No Place for Hate” is the ADL’s education program for combating bias, bullying and hatred in public schools.

The campaign was started as the number of anti-Semitic attacks has risen recently across the New York area, particularly in the borough of Brooklyn.

The team tweeted photos of players warming up in the shirts, writing: “Tonight, we’re warming up in #NoPlaceForHate shirts in collaboration with the @ADL to show that #WeGoHard against hate.”

The Nets defeated the Hawks 108-86.

Moderate Democrat Max Rose Set to Endorse Michael Bloomberg for President

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Rep. Max Rose, D-N.Y., a moderate Democrat from Staten Island, is set to endorse Michael Bloomberg for president.

Rose, a Jewish army veteran, is one of at least nine Democrats with national security backgrounds who flipped seats from Republican to Democratic in the 2018 presidential election, and whose districts voted for President Donald Trump in 2016.

The New York Post on Monday reported Rose’s plans, which have yet to be formally announced.

Bloomberg, who is self-funding his race, occupies the center-right flank of the still crowded Democratic field, but he says he will use his campaign resources to back whoever emerges as the Democratic nominee.

Don’t let your Destination Wedding or Honeymoon Become a Learning Experience!

I am just going to fall with the door in the house and tell you up front, that unless you are just booking a flight from one city to another in the US, please don’t book any real travel online. Don’t do it! I recently spoke to a few couples who made that mistake, which prompted me to write this blog. Yes, I know some of you have become online travel “experts” and can do it all by yourself, but believe me, if anything goes wrong, as it unfortunately often does, you have to figure out how to fix this it by yourself and often in a Country where you don’t speak the language. I was reading an article in Forbes in which the writer mentioned someone asking her to help with getting their money back from the agency the ticket was purchased through ONLINE, and of course there was no way for her to help. If the person had booked through her, she would have told her to get insurance. There are so many horror stories about travel plans that have gone wrong that I really don’t understand why people still do it to themselves. Not to mention that nowadays, travel is becoming complicated as security to almost all Countries have become really strict and rightly so!

Did you know some Countries require two full blank pages in your passport and others won’t allow you to enter if your passport expires in fewer than six months after your final day of travel? Travel agents and designers know all these things so you won’t be stuck somewhere you really don’t want to be. While doing research for this article, I came across some confusion where people are not sure what the difference is between Travel Agent, Travel Planner, Travel Specialist or Travel Designer to name but a few and  Camille Sanders, a certified travel agent who specializes in Romance Travel thinks that it depends on the generation people come from. She says 35+ travelers are somewhat familiar with what an agent does as their grandparents used to work with one to plan all the family trips. However, those in their 20’s – 30’s really are not sure what the Travel Agent does or the value of using one. Her and her colleagues have rescued several bride-to-be’s days, trip, and even weddings in some cases! If these clients had not booked through a Travel Agent, they would have been stuck in a foreign country, not knowing who to call or what to do! Imagine how much valuable pool or fun time you would be wasting, trying to fix a problem on the phone with someone who really doesn’t care about you or your vacation and has been taught standard responses to your problems. Especially with international travel. Any travel agent worth their salt will jump in to help work it out while the client is still enjoying their vacation & hanging out at the pool! A Travel Agent is a valued partner in making sure you have a wonderful vacation, by using their travel expertise & professional personal connections with many travel partners. She or he is with you every step of the way, until you return home. While you are planning your trip the agent will be able to tell you how to find the activities you enjoy and are interested in and the best time of the year to experience them.

This is especially important for those planning their very special destination wedding or honeymoon. In fact, I would say it is vital that you make these travel plans through an agent. If you are observant and/or have family who keeps kosher, you cannot be sure that the resort or hotel you are making your reservations at actually has a kosher kitchen, supervised by a Rabbi and with a hechsher you know and trust. I have come across hotels that have claimed to have a kosher kitchen and all that meant was they won’t serve you treif. In other words Kosher style, and then when you arrive, they plead ignorance. Don’t do it! Don’t let your wedding or honeymoon be a learning experience!

This is the time you want to focus on nothing other than your partner, wedding or honeymoon experience and do not want to be bothered with anything going wrong!

Your agent can tell you that it’s considered rude to tip in some countries, among them Australia, China, Belgium, Japan, Switzerland and New Zealand and warn you how your “inexpensive” hotel room suddenly costs an additional $200 when you get there in “hidden fees!” These are all invaluable things to know especially when you have just spent a lot of money on your wedding and honeymoon. She can tell you that if you go on an African Safari, which lodges offer reduced prices for brides and which exotic island will be a great stopover before you go back home. She will monitor your reservation and keep you informed of any changes that could occur. Even after you finalize your booking, she will be with you to make certain everything goes smoothly with your travel. There are countless reasons for using a travel agent, however it is even more important when you are planning a destination wedding or honeymoon. Aside from all the support you will receive for your travel plans from the time you start planning till the moment you return home, you will be treated as a destination wedding or honeymoon VIP! Resorts work with travel agents and know that if they don’t deliver excellent service, the word will spread throughout the travel community and that it can adversely affect future business with the agent. There really is no reason not to use an agent… and hundreds of reasons why you should.

Feel free to contact Camille Sanders for more information about Destination Weddings and Honeymoons and you can also reach her via her website. Camille is a true professional and absolutely reliable!

Thank you for spending this time with me and see you again soon!

Alleged Neo-Nazi Arrested in ‘Swatting’ Scheme

A suspected neo-Nazi was arrested on Jan. 10 for allegedly taking part in an effort to target various people through what’s known as “swatting.”

The Anti-Defamation League’s (ADL) Center on Extremism, which worked with law enforcement on the matter, defines swatting as “a harassment tactic in which a prank call is placed to emergency services (911), sending law enforcement officers (often a SWAT team) to a particular, targeted address.” The Washington Post reported that the suspect, 19-year-old John William Kirby Kelley, allegedly swatted Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. — which is where he went to school until January 2019 — as well as the African American Alfred Street Baptist Church in Alexandria, Va., in Nov. 2018.

Kelley is also alleged to have swatted an unknown individual in January 2019 under Secret Service protection and journalist Leonard Pitts Jr. in June, according to The Hill. The Department of Justice charged Kelley with conspiracy to make threats; if convicted, Kelley could face a maximum sentence of five years in prison.

According to the ADL, Kelley’s alleged swatting was coordinated in an internet chat room with an unnamed group that expressed support for the neo-Nazi Atomwaffen Division (AWD).

“Perpetrators chose hundreds of high-profile targets for hundreds of swatting calls, including government officials, executives and journalists,” the ADL’s report on the matter states. “Other targets were chosen based on the perpetrators’ racist and anti-Semitic views.”

The ADL report also states that it has found anti-Semitic social media posts from Kelley, including tweeting in January 2019 under the alias “Carl”: .@ChickfilA I did shrooms with your sandwich and it was very good, thank you for helping me realize the real enemy: the jews [sic].”

ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt tweeted, “I am incredibly proud of @ADL’s Center on Extremism for its role in the arrest of a Virginia man linked to neo-Nazis. With #hate motivated violence on the rise, the COE’s work is more important than ever.”

Oscar-Nominated Writer Buck Henry, 89

Buck Henry, an actor, comedian, director and producer who was nominated for an Academy Award for his screenplay for “The Graduate,” died from a heart attack on Jan. 8 at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 89.

Tributes from writers and comedians paid homage to Henry. “Dolemite Is My Name” and “Ed Wood” writer Larry Karaszewski said of Henry on Twitter: “He gave screenwriting a face. Growing up I could turn on ‘Saturday Night Live’ (which Buck hosted 10 times) and point to the funniest, smartest guy and say — that’s a screenwriter.”

Writer and director Judd Apatow tweeted, “Buck Henry was hilarious and brilliant and made us laugh more times than we even know. I was lucky enough to be on a panel with him at SXSW and he was so funny. He said, ‘I don’t like to write with other people because if they aren’t as funny as me I hate them and if they are funnier than me I hate them.’ He wrote ‘The Graduate’ and ‘To Die For’ and co-created ‘Get Smart’ and was a riot hosting [‘Saturday Night Live’] back when they would let a writer host ‘SNL.’ One of the greats.”

Henry left his comedic fingerprints on the small as well as well as the big screen in the 1960s and beyond. He was a cast member on “The New Steve Allen Show” and “That Was the Week That Was” in the early to mid-’60s.

He wrote for “The Garry Moore Show” and was the co-creator, with Mel Brooks, and writer for the spy-spoof sitcom “Get Smart” (1965-70) before transitioning to writing for the big screen. He wrote the screen adaptation of Joseph Heller’s darkly satirical World War II novel “Catch-22” (1970), which starred Alan Arkin, Martin Balsam and Richard Benjamin, about a man desperately trying to be declared insane so he can be kicked out of the military instead of having to serve.

Henry shared an Oscar nomination with Calder Willingham for “The Graduate” in 1967, adapted from Charles Webb’s novel of the same name. He won a BAFTA (British film award) and a Writers Guild of America (WGA) award for “The Graduate,” a seminal dark comedy about youth disillusionment in the turbulent ’60s.

He wrote the screenplay for the Barbra Streisand-George Segal vehicle “The Owl and the Pussycat” (1970), an adaptation of Bill Manoff’s Broadway play, and co-wrote “What’s Up, Doc?” (1972), another screwball comedy starring Streisand and Ryan O’Neal. The latter earned him another WGA Award.

He adapted Joyce Maynard’s novel “To Die For” for the 1995 film of the same name, which starred Nicole Kidman.

“I can write in anybody’s voice, which is why I am so successful at adapting books and plays,” Henry told Variety in a 2009 interview.

He co-directed and acted in “Heaven Can Wait” (1978), a remake of 1941’s “Here Comes Mr. Jordan” that starred Warren Beatty as a Los Angeles Rams quarterback snatched from his body by an overly eager guardian angel before he was meant to die. Beatty and Henry earned an Oscar nod for direction.

Henry co-wrote the star-studded vehicle “Town & Country” (2001). He also created the short-lived sitcoms “Captain Nice” (1967) and the science fiction-themed “Quark,” about a spaceship garbage scow and its crew.

He appeared in more than 40 films, including “The Man Who Fell to Earth,” “Eating Raoul,” “Defending Your Life,” “Short Cuts” and “Grumpy Old Men.” Later in his career, he appeared on the hit TV shows “Murphy Brown,” “Will & Grace” and “30 Rock.” In the show’s early days, Henry hosted “Saturday Night Live” 10 times from 1976-80.

He also appeared in a Broadway revival of “Mornings at Seven” in 2002.

Buck Henry was born Henry Zuckerman on Dec. 9, 1930, in New York. His father was a stockbroker and an Army Air Corps pilot, and his mother was a Ziegfeld Follies performer and an actress in silent films, The New York Times reported, adding that he was named for his grandfather, also a stockbroker, acquiring his nickname, Buck, in the process. He reportedly did not legally change his name to Buck Henry until the 1970s. He made his professional acting debut at age 15 in a Broadway production of “Life With Father.” He earned a bachelor’s degree in English literature at Dartmouth College and, after graduation, enlisted in the Army during the Korean War. He didn’t see combat, however, instead touring in Germany with a military theater troupe.

Deadline reported that Henry was survived by his wife, Irene Ramp, who was by his side when he died. The New York Times reported that his survivors also include a daughter from another relationship. His wife told the newspaper that she did not know the daughter’s name.

‘This Is Us’ Returns: Dan Fogelman Reveals What to Expect

After a nearly two-month hiatus, “This Is Us” returns to NBC Jan. 14 for the second half of its fourth season that has a lot of drama in store for the Pearson clan. The first three episodes will focus individually on Randall, Kevin and Kate—starting with Randall— in a story that focuses on his mental health issues. The first episode features guest appearances by Sophia Bush and John Legend, who debuts a new song.

“Later in the season we have some great guest stars involved in Randall’s very intense storyline,” series creator Dan Fogelman told the Journal at the Television Critics Association press tour. Pamela Adlon (“Better Things”) is among them. “She plays a limited but very important role in his story.”

Ron Cephas Jones (William) and Timothy Omundson (Gregory) will be back, and there will be an answer to the question of the identity of the mother of Kevin’s child “by the end of the season,” Fogelman said.

While he declined to say how many more seasons are left, there is definitely a finite number. “The plan that has existed since the beginning is still the plan. I know how the show ends, what season, how many episodes,” he said. “It’s not going to stay on forever because the timelines don’t lend themselves to that.

“The big strokes have been plotted out for years. We feel very strongly that we have a plan and we want to execute it,” he continued. “We could easily make more seasons of the show because there’s enough material, but we want to make it airtight and focus on the most complicated moments of these people’s lives. We know there’s a very limited shelf life and time that we get to do this so we’re throwing our all into it.”

Fogelman has no plans to do a spinoff once the show ends, but he is thinking about other projects. His company will announce a few new shows in the coming weeks that are “very different” from “This Is Us.” “I think it would be a mistake to make stuff that lives in the same territory while ‘This Is Us’ is still on,” he said.

Swastika Found Inside NYC Car

A swastika and several swear words were found inside a vehicle in a Queens neighborhood in New York City.

New York State Assemblyman Daniel Rosenthal (D-Queens) tweeted photos of the graffiti on Jan. 13, showing the swastika scrawled on the back of the driver’s seat with the words “F— you!” written next to it. The same words were also found in a couple of other spots inside the car.

“Yet another anti-Semitic attack,” Rosenthal tweeted. “This time in our own backyard. We must be able to feel safe in our neighborhoods. We must do more. This trajectory is unsustainable and unacceptable.”

New York City Police Department (NYPD) Detective Annette Shelton told the Journal in an email that the vandalism occurred on the evening of Jan. 12. The following morning, the driver of the vehicle, a 49-year-old male, “discovered the driver’s side door opened and multiple punctures and graffiti written inside.  There are no arrests at this time and NYPD’s Hate Crimes Task Force was notified and the investigation continues.”

Ricky Malone, Rosenthal’s communications director, told the Journal in an email that nothing was stolen from the vehicle, a 2019 Infinity.

Anti-Defamation League New York/New Jersey tweeted, “Aware of this alleged anti-Semitic incident in Queens. Reaching out to law enforcement to find out more.”

Swastika, ‘Kill All Jews’ Graffiti Found at Brooklyn High School

Graffiti of a swastika and the words “Kill All Jews” were found at Brooklyn Tech High School on Jan. 9.

The New York Daily News reported that the graffiti was written in black marker on a wall in the third-floor stairwell. New York City Department of Education spokesperson Miranda Barbot said in a Jan. 10 statement that the graffiti was reported to the New York Police Department (NYPD) and that the City Department of Education is working with the school to provide support to students.

“There’s no place for this kind of behavior in our schools, and we’re working across the city to combat anti-Semitism in all forms,” the statement said.

A student at the school, Dani Heba, told the New York Post, “This happens every year. There was anti-Semitic stuff last year, and someone made a noose out of toilet paper. It was supposed to be something about lynching. It’s disgusting. We don’t tolerate this here. It’s not representative of us.”

The Anti-Defamation League New York/New Jersey tweeted on Jan. 12, “Aware of the disturbing #antisemitic graffiti found at a #Brooklyn school last Thursday and we are in contact with law enforcement. These incidents have no place in our city and need to stop. Period.”

The NYPD confirmed to the Daily News that it is investigating the matter; no arrests have been made at this time.

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo condemned the graffiti in a Jan. 11 statement.

“I am appalled by the reports of a swastika and the message ‘Kill All Jews’ found scrawled on the walls of Brooklyn Tech High School,” Cuomo said. “This is New York, and we have absolutely zero tolerance for such acts of intolerance and bigotry. When you attack one of us, you attack all of us, and we will stand united with the Jewish community to condemn these illegal acts and eradicate this cancer of hate.”

He added that the State Hate Crimes Task Force will be working with the NYPD on its investigation into the matter.

“Racism, anti-Semitism and other forms of intolerance are repugnant to New York values,” Cuomo said. “We will fight back every time they rear their ugly head, and we will win because we are right and we know diversity is and always will be our greatest strength.”

According to NYPD data released on Jan. 2, there was a 24% increase in anti-Semitic hate crimes in New York City from 2018 to 2019.
