Jewish Teen Attacked, Called ‘Stupid Jew’ on London Bus

A 13-year-old Jewish boy was assaulted and called a “stupid Jew” while riding the bus in London on Jan. 5.

The Jewish Chronicle (JC) reports that an unidentified male punched the teenager in the stomach and said, “You stupid Jews think you own the world.” The Metropolitan Police told the JC that they are investigating the matter.

The Board of Deputies of British Jews said in a statement to the JC, “This unprovoked racist assault is sickening. The vile individual who perpetrated this attack must be arrested and subjected to the full force of the law.”

Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt similarly tweeted, “As #antiSemitism plagues our community in NY, we cannot forget that this is an international crisis. Yesterday, a 13 yr old was punched on a London bus in an #antiSemitic attack. No matter which side of the Atlantic it’s on, we must fight this scourge.”

On Dec. 6, a 36-year-old Jewish man was similarly punched and subjected to anti-Semitic verbal abuse on a London bus, according to the UK Independent. An unidentified male also attacked three Jewish children on a London bus on Nov. 24.

The Community Security Trust, a British watchdog against anti-Semitism, released a report in August stating there were 892 anti-Semitic incidents recorded in Britain from January to June, a record high for the country.

Israeli Foreign Ministry Praises Ukraine for Leaving UN Committee on Palestinian Rights

The Israeli Foreign Ministry issued a tweet on Jan. 6 lavishing praise on Ukraine for exiting from the United Nations Committee on the Exercise of Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP).

The tweet read, “We congratulate #Ukraine for ceasing its membership in the #UN’s anachronistic anti-Israeli #CEIRPP.” The ministry added, “We urge other committee members to follow suit. What are you still doing there???”

UN Watch Executive Director Hillel Neuer tweeted that the CEIRPP is a “pro-[Palestine Liberation Organization] propaganda committee.” He added that its membership has now declined from 26 countries to 25.

“This Orwellian U.N. committee claims to be about human rights but includes a plethora of serial human rights violators: Belarus, Cuba, Nicaragua, Pakistan, Turkey, Venezuela …,” Neuer wrote in a subsequent tweet. “Needless to say, there is no U.N. committee for the rights of the Kurdish people.”

According to The Jerusalem Post, the CEIRPP “is the source of many resolutions criticizing Israel, which are often adopted by the UN General Assembly.” UN Watch has similarly criticized the CEIRPP for turning “a blind eye to Palestinian terrorism against Israeli civilians. Committee’s mandate concerns Israeli actions only and is inherently prejudiced and one-sided.”

UN Watch has noted that the CEIRPP produced a resolution in November 2018 condemning “the Israeli occupation” and “the Nakba without tangible progress towards a peaceful solution.” The U.N. General Assembly passed the resolution later in the month. Additionally, in April 2014, the CEIRPP organized a conference that UN Watch said was “a gathering to promote lawfare and the global campaign of BDS (boycott, divestment and sanctions) against Israel under the seemingly neutral auspices of the U.N.”

Is There a Bad Time to Fight Evil?

It’s possible that the killing of Iran’s top military commander Qassem Soleimani by U.S. forces will turn out to be a disaster. Everything’s possible in a region where tribal and sectarian conflict under the rule of despots and theocrats has been the norm for centuries.

Will the killing set off another regional war? Will Israel be attacked? Will Iran rush to build a nuclear bomb? Or will Iran be deterred by the sheer brazenness of an unpredictable and bullying U.S. president?

Only time will tell.

The last seismic U.S. action in the region was the invasion of Iraq in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks, which turned into a $3 trillion debacle that arguably made things worse by increasing Iranian Shiite influence inside a weakened Iraq.

This latest move is not an invasion; it’s an assassination. The arguments against the move center on two points: Why now? And why so extreme?

Regarding the timing, critics point to decades of brutal terrorist activity by Soleimani and wonder: If previous administrations opted not to target him then because it was too risky, why target him now? What changed?

Supporters respond: If a bully keeps punching you in the face over and over again, is there ever a bad time to punch back?

Supporters respond: If a bully keeps punching you in the face over and over again, is there ever a wrong time to punch back?

Soleimani was indeed the bully par excellence in a part of the world that specializes in them.

Writing in The New York Times, Michael Doran, senior fellow at the Hudson Institute, called Soleimani “the architect of the Islamic Republic’s decades-long active campaign of violence against the United States and its allies, especially Israel.”

Soleimani, Doran writes, started with Lebanon, where he “built Lebanese Hezbollah into the powerful state within a state that we know today. A terrorist organization receiving its funds, arms and marching orders from Tehran, Hezbollah has a missile arsenal larger than that of most countries in the region.”

Building on that success, “[Soleimani] spent the last decade replicating the Hezbollah model in Iraq, Syria and Yemen, propping up local militias with precision weapons and tactical know-how.”

Among these many killing fields, the worst must surely be Syria, where Soleimani’s forces “allied with Russia to prop up the regime of Bashar al-Assad, a project that, in practice, has meant driving over 10 million people from their homes and killing well over half a million.”

In Iraq, Doran adds, “hundreds of American soldiers lost their lives to the weapons that [Soleimani’s] Qods Force provided to its Iraqi proxies.”

As Soleimani drenched country after country in blood, including Jewish and American blood, the United States let him get away with it — until it didn’t.

Which brings up the second point of the critics: Why do something so drastic as an assassination? Is it worth the risk? This is a fair point: We are compelling Iran to respond in kind, which can set off a war no one wants.

Supporters challenge that view: The extreme nature of eliminating Soleimani is precisely what can deter the Iranians, who will now be concerned, if not terrified, by what President Donald Trump might do next.

The Iranians can no longer count on a U.S. president who has been reluctant to use military force, tolerating one Iranian provocation after another and responding only with economic sanctions.

Iran, then, is in a bind: To protect its honor, it must be bold and respond harshly; but to protect its country, it must be cautious so as not to provoke the U.S. president.

So, if I’m an Iranian leader plotting revenge, here’s what might be going through my head: “This guy Trump is out of control. If we respond too harshly, he’s likely to take down our oil refineries and shut down our economy. At this point, we can’t put anything past him.”

Iran, then, is in a bind: To protect its honor, it must be bold and respond harshly; but to protect its country, it must be cautious so as not to provoke the U.S. president.

As I write this, we’re already hearing about an Iranian missile attack on a U.S. base. I don’t pretend to know which way the winds of war will blow.

But I do know that I have hopes and dreams. I hope and dream that a regime that hangs gays because they’re gays, oppresses women because they’re women, sponsors more terror than any nation on Earth and is sworn to the destruction of the world’s only Jewish state — well, I hope and dream that such a regime is really scared right now about what might happen if it continues to spread its evil.

The best bully is a scared bully.

U.S. Embassy Issues Warning of Possible Iran Attack on Israel

The United States embassy in Jerusalem issued a statement on Jan. 6 warning of possible rocket attacks from Iran in response to the U.S. killing of Iranian Gen. Qassem Soleimani in an airstrike on Jan. 3, the Times of Israel (TOI) reported.

The embassy’s statement read: “Out of an abundance of caution, the embassy strongly encourages U.S. citizens to remain vigilant and take appropriate steps to increase their security awareness, as security incidents, including rocket fire, often take place without warning.” The embassy also urged American citizens to follow all instructions from Israeli officials if red alert sirens sound.

Similarly, the Chabad Lubavitch Security Commission issued a warning on Jan. 2 that the Soleimani killing could result in an increased risk of Chabad centers and other Jewish institutions being targeted in attacks.

“Although there is no information at this time to suggest a direct threat to Chabad centers as a result of this escalation, as in past conflicts, there exists a concern that the current situation and tensions could contribute to a heightened risk and threat environment for Jewish facilities and Chabad centers,” the Chabad statement read. They encouraged Chabad centers to be particularly vigilant in screening out any suspicious behavior near their centers.

However, Israeli security officials believe that it is unlikely that Iran will attack Israel over the Soleimani killing, according to TOI.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a Jan. 5 statement, “Qassem Soleimani brought about the death of many American citizens and many other innocents in recent decades and at present. Soleimani initiated, planned and carried out many terrorist attacks throughout the Middle East and beyond. President Trump is deserving of all esteem for taking determined, strong and quick action. I would like to reiterate — Israel fully stands alongside the U.S. in the just struggle for security, peace and self-defense.”

However, Netanyahu told his security cabinet that Israel should stay out of any fallout regarding the Soleimani killing, as it was solely “a U.S. event.”

Ghislaine Maxwell, British Socialite Accused of Helping Jeffrey Epstein, Reportedly Hides in Israel

(JTA) — Ghislaine Maxwell, a British socialite who has been accused of helping late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, is reportedly hiding out in Israel.

A source told the New York Post that Maxwell, the daughter of the late Jewish media mogul Robert Maxwell, is being “protected” in a number of countries, including Israel.

“She is not in the U.S., she moves around,” the source said in an article published last week. “She is sometimes in the U.K., but most often in other countries, such as Israel, where her powerful contacts have provided her with safe houses and protection.”

Last month, Reuters reported that the Federal Bureau of Investigation is probing Maxwell and others with ties to Epstein.

Maxwell and Epstein were romantically involved for several years and then remained close. One of Epstein’s alleged victims, Virginia Giuffre, has accused Maxwell of recruiting her to have sex with him when she was a minor. Maxwell denied the allegations.

Epstein, the Jewish millionaire financier facing sex trafficking charges for allegedly abusing dozens of minor girls, hanged himself in his New York City jail cell in August, law enforcement officials said. Though New York City’s chief medical examiner ruled his death a suicide, a forensic pathologist hired by his family said the autopsy pointed to homicide.

Harvey Weinstein’s Rape and Sexual Assault Trial Begins

(JTA) — Disgraced film producer Harvey Weinstein arrived at a New York court for the start of his trial on charges of rape and sexual assault.

Weinstein used a walker due to recent back surgery as he entered the courthouse on Monday morning, according to reports.

Jury selection is scheduled to begin this week in the case. Weinstein has been accused of sexual wrongdoing by multiple women, but the trial centers on just two charges, that Weinstein raped a woman in a hotel room in New York in 2013 and forced another woman to allow him to perform oral sex on her in 2006.

Weinstein has pleaded not guilty and said that any sexual activity was consensual.

Also on Monday, the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office filed rape and sexual assault charges against Weinstein, The Los Angeles Times reported.  The office has said it was reviewing eight cases involving Weinstein.

In a CNN interview conducted by email, Weinstein said that he has been in rehab since October 2017, including a 12-step program and meditation, and has “learned to give up my need for control.” He also told CNN that the media has sensationalized the allegations against him, causing the “public’s biggest misconceptions.”

He also wrote that he thinks he can “build back to” a career in the film industry. The movie studio that he cofounded with his brother Bob in 2005, The Weinstein Company, has closed and filed for bankruptcy.

CNN asked him if he felt empathy for his accusers. Weinstein responded: “While I do have many empathetic opinions regarding many people, I am following the advice of my lawyers on the eve of my trial to not offer any commentary on this.”

Dozens of women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct that took place over decades, including actresses such as Rosanna Arquette, Ashley Judd, Rose McGowan and Gwyneth Paltrow.
