Petition Launched Calling for UNC Asheville to Replace Tamika Mallory as Keynote MLK Speaker

A petition has been launched on the Stop Antisemitism website calling for University of North Carolina Asheville to replace Women’s March leader Tamika Mallory as their keynote speaker for a Martin Luther King, Jr. event.

The petition states that Mallory has “a history of anti-Semitic behavior, which includes invoking anti-Semitic canards and supporting Louis Farrakhan, one of America’s most notorious anti-Semites and the leader of the Nation of Islam.”

The petition proceeds to note that King was a staunch supporter of Israel, calling Israel “one of the great outposts of democracy in the world.”

“Choosing a bigot like Tamika Mallory as a keynote speaker is an insult to Dr. King’s legacy as one of America’s most important civil rights leaders,” the petition states.

The petition notes that various Women’s March groups are severing themselves from the national Women’s March organization as evidence of how out of step the Women’s March national leaders’ anti-Semitism with the progressive movement.

When asked by the Journal about the petition, a spokesperson from the University of North Carolina Asheville pointed to a statement from Chancellor Nancy Cable and Interim Provost Karin Peterson that read, in part: “The Constitutional and democratic principles of freedom of thought and expression are central to our mission as a university, especially during the day honoring the legacy and enduring values of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”

“As has been our custom, the university’s invitation to an individual speaker at a university event in no way implies endorsement of that speaker’s comments, critiques, views, ideas, or actions,” the statement continued. “Further, the university’s fundamental principles reject bias in all of its forms including anti-Semitism and discrimination.”

Roz Rothstein, CEO of StandWithUs, said in a statement, “If the administration is genuine about rejecting anti-Semitism and discrimination, it will unequivocally condemn Mallory’s hateful statements toward Jews and praise of Louis Farrakhan. Freedom of expression does not mean freedom from criticism for engaging in bigotry. The university should use its own free speech rights to take a moral stand and confront Mallory on this issue.”

Simon Wiesenthal Center Associate Dean Rabbi Abraham Cooper called on UNC Asheville to cancel the event.

“A keynote address celebrating Martin Luther King Jr’s legacy of unity by a person who embraces anti-Semite Louis Farrakhan, America’s divider-in-chief,” Cooper told the Journal in an email. “We call on UNC to cancel an event that besmirched and mocks MLK. Tamika Mallory must choose between two legacies MLK or Farrakhan. You can’t embrace love and hate simultaneously.”

Rep. Tlaib on Trump: ‘Impeach The Motherf–––er!’

Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) dropped an expletive when she called for President Trump to be impeached in a speech on Thursday night.

Tlaib told her supporters at a MoveOn.org event that her son said to her, “Momma, look you won. Bullies don’t win.”

“And I said, ‘Baby, they don’t,’ ” Tlaib said. “Because we’re going to go in there and impeach the motherf—er.”

Tlaib defended her comments in a tweet:

However, she refused to answer reporters’ questions on the matter:

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) deflected when asked about Tlaib’s comments:

Trump told reporters during a press briefing in the Rose Garden on Friday that he thought Tlaib’s comments were “disgraceful.”

“I think she dishonored herself, and I think she dishonored her family,” Trump said. “Using language like that in front of her son, and whoever else was there, I thought that was a great dishonor to her and to her family. I thought it was highly disrespectful to the United States of America.”

Tlaib, the first elected Palestinian-American congresswoman, has called for a one-state solution and has expressed support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement. A map in her Washington D.C. congressional office featured a sticky note emblazoned with the word “Palestine” over Israel.

Shalhevet Alum Arrested for Allegedly Burglarizing Celebrity Homes

Police announced on Thursday that an alumnus of Shalhevet High School was arrested for allegedly burglarizing multiple celebrity homes.

The alumnus, identified as 32-year-old Benjamin Eitan Ackerman, allegedly posed as a real-estate agent during open houses, where he would reportedly case the homes and then come back later to steal items.

Ackerman allegedly stole more than 2,000 items worth millions of dollars including jewelry artwork and wine, from celebrities including Adam Lambert and Usher. Authorities posted pictures of the stolen items online

Ackerman was released on $1 million bail and forensics tests on the stolen items are ongoing.

According to The Boiling Point, Shalhevet’s student newspaper, Ackerman was known as a cordial person who was friendly with everyone, even though he wasn’t overly sociable and shied away from pictures.

“It’s kind of upsetting sometimes when you have religious people committing crimes, because there’s an expectation that if you have a religious upbringing you will not steal from people or hurt people yet we see it all the time,” Shalhevet Judaic Studies teacher Rabbi Abraham Lieberman told The Boiling Point. “That’s the human being, Jewish or not Jewish.”

Learning From The “Burning Bush” Poem

The ever-glowing tree

Leads down many avenues

When we are awake to love.

My love

Does not want to burn you

Do you notice the flame?

Do you notice the burning fruits?

The burning keyboard?

The burning buildings?

The burning food?

Do you notice the burning sounds of streetcars?

For all burns with the same fire.

My love

Does not want to destroy and distill you down until we get to the Truth

My love

Does not want to teach and dare you and ravage us to the depths of the eternal

We need to know that the heart’s love

Does not consume us

But burns

Forever.

And as the world’s heat

burns around me, and does not consume me,

My love

loves what is here.

My heart

loves what is you.

Hunt Sales on Comeback Album, Jewish Roots and Legendary Father Soupy

If you are a serious rock fan, I have no doubt that you have heard Hunt Sales play. His credits as a drummer include Iggy Pop, David Bowie and Todd Rundgren. That is indeed him playing the famous drum intro to Iggy Pop’s “Lust For Life.” A professional musician since his teenage years, Sales was first exposed to the entertainment business in being the son of comedian and television personality Soupy Sales. Notably, Sales’ brother Tony is also a musician of note, playing alongside Hunt on the Iggy, Bowie and Rundgren tracks.

Now based in Austin, Texas, Hunt Sales is about to release a new full-length solo album. Titled “Get Your S**t Together,” the first single released from the 12-track collection —  as credited to the Hunt Sales Memorial — was “One Day,” which hit Spotify and other digital sites in November. “Get Your…” hits stores on January 25, thanks to Fat Possum Records subsidiary Big Legal Mess.

As noted by Sales in the press release issued by legendary publicist Cary Baker of Conqueroo: “You know the movie ‘Rocky,’ with Sylvester Stallone and Burgess Meredith?’… Well, I’m like both of their characters at the same time. I’m the hungry fighter looking for his shot, and the cranky old (sic) that’s seen it all. I got these songs and a killer band. I’m ready to get in the ring.” Crude, yes, but that’s the sort of attitude which Sales refreshingly brings to his solo career.

I had the pleasure of interviewing Hunt Sales by phone, and some highlights from that November 2018 chat are below. The full audio of the interview is below for your listening pleasure and will appear on a future edition of the Paltrocast With Darren Paltrowitz podcast.

Jewish Journal: An interesting thing I noticed within your headshot is that you have a Star Of David tattoo on your left arm. When did you get that?

Hunt Sales: I had one of my ankle about 30 years ago… And now it’s like with tattoos, you’re not buried in a Jewish cemetery, but that’s part of my heritage and my father’s father was Jewish and my mother’s father was Jewish. So I was not bar mitzvahed, but I consider myself a Jew, and I’m proud that I am, you know what I mean? And that is a big part of me. It just is.

It’s funny, you get outside of New York and certain areas, you know how Jews are treated. People will make jokes and just be a little bit too much into it. So I could imagine what it’s like to be African-American and what they go through as a society, or Hispanics. But I do know that being a Jew in certain circles I am not liked…

I’m an equal opportunity lover and hater and I don’t care what you are. You are either a good person or not. I don’t care what religion you are, I don’t care what color you are, there’s dumbasses that come in every color and every religion and there’s great people that come in every religion and color, as you know. So that is part of my heritage and I’m proud of it.

JJ: Any last words for the kids?

HS: I remember being younger and people would try to tell me this and that, and everyone has to have their own experience, you know? You can tell somebody something and help to guide them… They really have to have their own experience to really learn. We have to have our own experiences and I don’t want to play God to anybody…

So I’m just I’m just grateful and lucky that I have this opportunity now to keep playing music and hopefully I inspire people. That’s really what my mission here, just to inspire people and be there for her and for my daughters and be there for my wife and family and that’s about it.

Fred Savage, Billy Eichner to Have ‘Friends From College’ Wedding

Wedding bells will ring in the second season of the Netflix comedy “Friends From College,” which follows a sextet of Harvard alumni living in New York, some of whom have become estranged since news of an extra-marital affair fractured the groups relationship dynamic at the end of season one. The impending nuptials of literary agent Max (Fred Savage) and his partner Felix (Billy Eichner) force the others to come together for the events leading up to the wedding, including engagement and bachelor parties.

The plot picks up a year after Ethan’s (Keegan-Michael Key) longtime affair with Sam (Annie Parisse) was exposed. Sam is trying to repair her marriage to Jon (Greg Germann), while Ethan’s wife Lisa (Cobie Smulders) is dating someone new. Nick (Nat Faxon) and Marianne (Jae Suh Park) are still together, as far as we know.

Former child actor Savage (“The Wonder Years”) now hosts the game show “Child Support” on ABC. Eichner, known for “Billy on the Street,” “American Horror Story,” and “Difficult People,” will voice Timon in “The Lion King,” due out in July.

The eight-episode “College” season begins streaming on Netflix Jan. 11.
