No, dinosaurs were not on Noah’s Ark
Ham, president of Answers in Genesis and founder of the “>lightning struck last week and injured a staffer, is used to fighting an uphill battle against science. Unlike many “>6,000 years old.
But his recent statement in the spot “What Really Happened to the Dinosaurs,” which can be heard in the above “>HuffPost:
“Evolution has claimed dinosaurs evolved over 200 million years ago, that nobody ever lived with them,” Ham says in the ad. “But the Bible gives a different history. God tells us that he created all land animals the same day he created man, about 6,000 years ago. What's more, there are even dinosaurs on Noah's Ark because God told Noah to take pairs of every land animal.”
Let's start with the fact that the Bible makes no mention of dinosaurs. Anywhere. Not just in the account of Noah's Ark. That, though, could be said of zebras and ferrets and koala bears.
But logically how are we going to reconcile anything, and certainly two of it, the size of a dinosaur being on the Ark?
The Ark was massive–300 cubits (or about 137 meters) by 50 cubits by 30 cubits. But a brontosaurus along is 23 meters long; the longest dinosaur was almost triple that length. A few dinosaurs alone would fill the whole thing.
And Ham should know that: A “>responses like this:
“Dinosaurs lived in the Garden of Eden, and Noah’s Ark? Give me a break,” said Kevin Padian, curator at the University of California Museum of Paleontology in Berkeley and president of National Center for Science Education, an Oakland group that supports teaching evolution. “For them, ‘The Flintstones’ is a documentary.”
Christians could reasonably disagree on what Genesis really says about creation (e.g., six days or six eras, all at once or evolving over time). But it's difficult for me to imagine many of my co-religionists believing that Noah piled a couple tyrannosauruses and friends on the Ark and riding it out with them for 150 days.
