Charlie Sheen, John Galliano and the Jews

Expressions of anti-Semitism by public figures generally follow a certain script in the media. The politician/actor/public figure says something construed as offensive/hostile/insensitive to Jews. Abraham Foxman, the national director of the Anti-Defamation League, issues a condemnatory statement demanding penance. The offender expresses regret. If he deems it sufficient, Foxman issues his kosher certification absolving the sinner.

One and a Half Men? Sitcom sacks Sheen

Actor Charlie Sheen has been fired from his hit CBS sitcom in the wake of a rant against the show\’s executive producer that was called \”borderline anti-Semitism.\” Sheen was fired Monday, effective immediately, from \”Two and a Half Men,\” for which he was paid $2 million per episode. The series was not canceled, however.

‘Shoah’ playing in Iran

The Holocaust documentary \”Shoah\” is being broadcast in Iran. The 1985 documentary by French director Claude Lanzmann was scheduled to be presented this week on a satellite channel and is dubbed in Farsi. Satellites are banned in Iran, but many Iranians have them and therefore could watch the film, which includes survivor testimony.

Jewish leaders appeal to Cuba to free Gross

Jewish leaders have called on the Cuban government to release Jewish U.S. government contractor Alan Gross, jailed for more than a year, for time served. Leaders of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations on Monday issued their humanitarian appeal to the Cuban government following the completion of Gross\’ two-day trial over the weekend. A verdict has not been released but is expected within the next few days.

Raze illegal outposts, Israeli Cabinet orders

Israel\’s Cabinet has ordered the demolition of all illegal West Bank outposts built on private Palestinian land by the end of the year. Monday\’s decision, echoing one announced earlier this month, comes in response to a petition submitted by Peace Now to the Supreme Court calling for the demolition of six outposts: Ramat Gilad, Mitzpe Yitzhar, Givat Har\’eh, Givat Asaf, Ma\’aleh Rehavam and Mitzpeh Lachish.

Triangle Shirtwaist fire reminds of need for unions

Late on the afternoon of Saturday, March 25, 1911, a fire erupted at the Triangle Shirtwaist Company on the top floors of a modern, fire-proof building at the corner of Manhattan’s Washington Place and Greene Street, near Washington Square Park. In the bedlam precipitated by the flames and smoke, more than 200 panicked employees jammed the only open exit; a company policy aimed at eliminating employee theft locked a second exit door. They overwhelmed the one inadequate working elevator, and the single fire escape collapsed. Those trapped inside rushed to the window ledges and, with flames licking at their backs, leapt. They fell to their deaths on the pavement below within sight of thousands of witnesses.\n
