Israel and the dictators (besides Mubarak)

It’s not that we’re against democracy, goes the Israeli line on Egypt, it’s that we’re afraid of the Islamists and radical Arab nationalists taking over. We’re afraid to lose the peace. We’re right on Egypt’s border – the front line. We love democracy, we want democracy for everyone, certainly for our Arab neighbors, and we hate dictatorship, of course – we’re just very worried about our security, and we have a right to be.

‘Zorba’ composer declares himself an anti-Semite

Mikis Theodorakis, the Greek composer who wrote the music for the film \”Zorba the Greek,\” said in a television interview that he is an \”anti-Semite and anti-Zionist.\” Theodorakis, 86, a hero in Greece, also said in the interview on Greece\’s High channel that \”everything that happens today in the world has to do with the Zionists.\” He added that \”American Jews are behind the world economic crisis that has hit Greece also.\”

Israel strikes Gaza in retaliation for mortar attacks

Israeli airstrikes hit three terror sites in Gaza in response to shelling on southern Israel, the Israeli military said. The sites targeted late Tuesday night were a terrorist tunnel and a terrorist activity site in the central Gaza Strip, and a terrorist activity site in the northern Gaza Strip, according to the Israel Defense Forces.

Partner of slain Israeli ordered to leave

The partner of an Israeli man killed in an attack on a gay community center in Tel Aviv has been ordered deported. Thomas Schmidt of Germany, who has lived in Israel for six years, was contacted Feb. 6 by Israel\’s Interior Ministry to remind him that his visa offering him temporary resident status is expiring and he must leave the country by the end of the month, Ynet reported Wednesday.

Actress Claire Danes arrives in Israel

Actress Claire Danes has landed in Israel to film scenes for a new television series based on an Israeli show. Danes arrived Monday in Israelto film the Fox television series \”Patriots,\” based on the Israeli series \”Kidnapped,\” in which Israeli soldiers return after 17 years being held as POWs in Lebanon.

Barak meeting top U.S. officials

Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak is in Washington meeting top administration officials and Congress members. Barak is meeting Wednesday with Dennis Ross, the top Iran policy official in the White House; Tom Donilon, the national security adviser; Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton; and Defense Secretary Robert Gates, as well as Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-Fla.), the chairwoman of the U.S. House of Representatives\’ Foreign Affairs Committee and other Congress members.
