He Likes Guys. He Likes Girls. Does He Like Me?

Dear Yenta,

I am with a man who is bisexual. He says he’s sworn off men and seems to be really into me…at times. In fact sometimes it is extremely passionate. But he is not only bisexual, but also extremely troubled mentally.

Anyway-we hung out for 9 hours the other day at my apartment and he did not make one move which I think is strange-we did not even kiss. Usually when I am with a man and it’s new (we have only been together one month) its very passionate. What to do?

-Does He Like Me?

Dear DHLM,

You have given me lots of random tidbits, but I don’t completely see how they connect. From your question I don’t totally see what his bisexuality has to do with anything, except that you doubt his attraction for you. This could be the case with anyone, and does not necessarily have any bearing on his attraction to men. There are lots of things that can be happening here. My first inclination is that you don’t like this guy/are overwhelmed and confused by his nature.

Something may simply be amiss with him, or between the two of you, not related to sexual preference. Some relationships start physically wild, and others don’t. Some people are comfortable with doubling up on both emotional and physical intimacy, and others aren’t. It is possible that you and your man just need to move slowly if your connection warrants nine hour conversations. Long deep talks and long deep kissing is sometimes a lot to handle in one day.

Because you have been dating for less than six months and are already full of doubts, maybe convert this relationship into a friendship – as soon as possible. They say that it should be easy at first. I don’t always buy this, but I do believe that if you doubt their attraction for you it is a deeper issue. In those six first months, whether you are doing it daily or saving yourself for the lord, at the very least you should feel undoubtedly wanted.

You could talk to him, but I don’t think there is much to ask. “Do you like me?” That is awkward, and should be obvious by now. He might have deeper issues which you could try to discover via conversation. It is all a matter of how much wading through someone else’s demons you are up for.

Why, a better question to ask, are you drawn to him? What of yourself do you see in this man? What are you meant to learn from this encounter about your own inner workings?

Sounds to me like you got yourself a buddy more than a boyfriend, and in the end, there’s no crime in that.

Jesus is coming back next May

And here I thought the end of the world was coming in 2012.

Save the date—Jesus is scheduled to make his second coming appearance on May 21, 2011.

That’s according to Harold Camping, founder of Family Radio, Inc. Billboards have been put up around Nashville, Tennessee and other cities like Detroit, Little Rock, Omaha, and Kansas City announcing the second coming. The cheesy billboards remind me of signs teasing a television series or the opening of a Broadway show. Jesus is about to make his big entrance only his final number will feature the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Tom Evans, spokesman for Family Radio said their math for setting the return date came from a verse in Luke 17: “As it was in the days of Noah, so shall it be in the days of the Son of Man.”

That is from Religion Dispatches, and you can see the “math” here.

First Team All-Jewish NBA

Photo

You know I love talking about Jews and basketball. Obviously I’d relish the chance to pick my all-Jewish starting five. Tablet has made that possible:

he story of Jews in American basketball remains one to be proud of. Which is why we’ve teamed up with FreeDarko, the amazing five-year-old collective of basketball writers known for its wit, one-of-a-kind drawings, and revealing focus on unorthodox statistics, to let you select your top all-time Jewish-American starting five, plus a Jewish coach, naturally.

Naturally because one of basketball’s greatest legends is a Jewish coach—Red Auerbach—and many other Jews have been great coaches. The surprising history of Jews in basketball, which I discussed at length in this Jordan Farmar profile, is that for the first half of the 20th century basketball was dominated by Jewish players.

Tablet allows you to pick from three Jewish players for each position. Farmar made the cut, as did Amar’e Stoudemire, who actually isn’t Jewish. Omri Casspi was left off. More surprisingly, Hy Gotkin was too.

My starting five are shown in the above image. Whom would you choose?

My Eight Miracle wish list for this Chanukah is:

1. That my own Chanukah Youtube video gets as many hits as the Maccabeat video got eventhough mine was shot on a flip and not some well choreographed spoof dreidle song.

2. That us Jews can just get one lousy Mall Menorah to reach or extend past the gargantuan X-mas tree placed in front of Sears because let’s face it, it’s humiliating.

3. That my kids don’t clean me out during high stakes dreidle, and I can finally win enough money to buy a latte.

4. That my eight year old finally has aspirations to get a job when he’s older instead of saving a lifetime stash of Chanukah gelt with the hopes he never has to work once he’s grown up.

5. That the many jelly doughnuts and latkes I consume miraculously makes me LOSE weight, like the cookie diet, or one of those high calorie yet healthy for you chocolate covered zone bars- really, those are good for you?

6.  That my six little menorahs are found more decorative than my neighbor’s Christmas Santa raindeer light show extravaganza he makes every year on his front lawn.

7. That Chocolate gelt finally come with nuts and caramel.

8. That pre-packed glass olive oil and wick viles and the colorful candles that burn down in six minutes don’t cost more than my Menorah.

Sugar Daddy vs. Law School Lackey

I’m in the middle of studying for law school finals right now which means I’m close to suicidal.  Actually, I should be but I’m really just procrastinating – the joys of being a 3L I guess.  Every year, about this time, as I’m hating law school finals like the fat girls in sixth grade hated me, I start to think about dropping out.  I don’t hate law school, but the finals are just so momentously brutal, that as I sit here staring at my Fed Tax Outline, my mind starts to wonder, would being a Sugar Baby really be so bad?  Being a lawyer seems equally dreadful but if I pick Sugar Baby, I don’t have to take this final Tuesday.

So right about this time of year, careful to hide the screen on my mac from my fellow coffee-shop hipsters, I usually start searching sites like sugardaddyforme.com and sugardaddie.com and wonder which would truly be worse: marrying someone for money? Or taking my finals and being a lawyer?  Well, let’s compare:

Being a professionally kept woman would mean sex with an old man = Lawyer 1, Sugar Baby 0

But being a lawyer still means Winter Final Exams + Spring Final Exams + the Bar this summer = Lawyer 1, Sugar Baby 1

Becoming a Sugar Baby means Sugar Daddy is probably divorced and has a daughter who has 45 friends in common with me on Facebook = Lawyer 2, Sugar Baby 1

Another semester with annoying law school kids who started studying weeks ago, post Facebook statuses about how behind they are, and think the funniest thing in the world is any joke about 1Ls = Lawyer 2, Sugar Baby 2

Probably being asked to sign a prenup instead of knowing how to get around a prenup = Lawyer 3, Sugar Baby 2

Old man smell = Lawyer 4, Sugar Baby 2

Listening to the kids on law review talk about how tough being a god, I mean on law review = Lawyer 4, Sugar Baby 3

Probably being the only parent who can carry your child without throwing out your back = Lawyer 5, Sugar Baby 3

Being the only student who will go to my review session today and genuinely need to ask questions because I don’t understand something big that’s going to be on the test instead of listening to some kid ranked first in our class ask a question about the most irrelevant part of the tax code pre-1928 so he can show the professor how smart he thinks he is = Lawyer 5, Sugar Baby 4

Explaining to my kids how mommy and daddy met online at sugardaddie.com = Lawyer 6, Sugar Baby 4

Finding a law job, being a lawyer, working with other lawyers = Lawyer 6, Sugar Baby 5

Buying a senior discount ticket at the movie theatre on date night = Lawyer 7, Sugar Baby 5

Wearing suits everyday vs. wearing short designer dresses that are inappropriately extravagant for errands = Lawyer 7, Sugar Baby 6

Spending 80 hours a week doing discovery vs. leisurely writing my novel = Lawyer 7, Sugar Baby 7

Alright it’s 2am right now and I’m exhausted so it’s time to make a decision.  Do I stay up to understand why section 1014(b)(6) of the tax code says that there’s a double step down basis for a surviving spouse if the property value of a house owned in joint tenancy has gone down……or whoring myself out for the rest of my life.  Damnit!  I really thought I was convincing myself this time…

DiCaprio converting to Judaism?

Leonardo DiCaprio is rumored to be considering converting to Judaism for his longtime girlfriend, Israeli supermodel Bar Refaeli.

The possible conversion by DiCaprio, a non-practicing Catholic, is a sign that the popular American actor and Refaeli will marry, the Daily Mail reported Sunday.

“Leo’s sudden intense interest in Israel, its culture and religion is the clearest sign yet that he intends to marry Bar,” said an anonymous source quoted in the London newspaper.

DiCaprio has visited Refaeli in Israel several times, most recently in November. It has been rumored for months that the couple are engaged.

Top Haifa cop the latest victim of Carmel fire

The number of Israelis killed in a massive fire in the Carmel Forest rose to 42 with the death of Haifa Police Chief Ahuva Tomer.

Tomer, the the police chief since March 2009 and the highest-ranking female officer in the Israel Police, died Monday.

She was burned over 90 percent of her body last week after trying to assist prison guard cadets riding in a bus that caught fire while on its way to evacuate a prison in the path of the blaze. Most of the bus passengers and three volunteer rescuers died in the fire in northern Israel.

Also Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the Finance Ministry to provide nearly $700 immediately to each member of families who will be prevented from returning to their damaged homes for at least the next month.

The funds are designated for basic, emergency necessities such as clothing and shoes, and school supplies.

The allocation came during a special Knesset hearing on the fire and its consequences, which opened with a moment of silence.

Meanwhile, two teenage brothers from the Druze village of Ussfiya arrested on suspicion of negligence in starting the fire and ordered held until midweek by a Haifa court were released to house arrest on Monday.

The teens are accused of lighting a bonfire near their home that sparked the blaze, though Ussfiya residents claim that a fire in a poorly maintained garbage dump near the village was the culprit.

Ninth Circuit to hear Prop. 8 appeal

We are less than an hour away from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals hearing the Prop. 8 case. In August, U.S. District Court Judge Vaughn R. Walker deemed unconstitutional the California voter-passed amendment banning gay marriage. Now the appellate court must decide whether Walker was correct.

But there is a chance we’ll never get an answer to that question. First the three-judge panel must decide whether supporters of Prop. 8 even have standing to bring this appeal. I’m not sure if this is an issue of first impression for the court, but traditionally only the state can appeal the constitutionality of its own laws—and Gov. Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown, who will soon replace Schwarzenegger, both agreed with Walker and declined to back the law.

Check out the hearing live on C-SPAN. Also, check out the live-updating from KPCC, which is where I found that photo of a Prop. 8 supporter outside the courthouse.

Teen arrested after admitting to starting Israeli fire

A 14-year-old resident of the Druze village of Ussfiya was arrested after admitting to starting the fire that destroyed much of the Carmel Forest.

The teen reportedly said he was smoking a nargila water pipe and threw a live coal into an open area before returning to school.

The arrest was announced hours after two teenage brothers from the same village arrested over the weekend on suspicion of negligence in starting the fire were released from detention by a Haifa court. The teens had been accused of lighting a bonfire near their home that sparked the blaze.

Also Monday, the number of Israelis killed in the fire rose to 42 with the death of Haifa Police Chief Ahuva Tomer.

Thousands attended the Monday afternoon funeral of Tomer, the police chief since March 2009 and the highest-ranking female officer in the Israel Police.

She was burned over 90 percent of her body last week after trying to assist prison guard cadets riding in a bus that caught fire while on its way to evacuate a prison in the path of the blaze. Most of the bus passengers and three volunteer rescuers died in the fire in northern Israel.

The funds are designated for basic, emergency necessities such as clothing and shoes, and school supplies.

The allocation came during a special Knesset hearing on the fire and its consequences, which opened with a moment of silence.

Later in the day, Netanyahu ordered the creation of a national firefighting command under the authority of the Prime Minister’s Office.

He also appointed Netanya Mayor Miriam Fierberg to head a task force in charge of managing assistance for those whose homes were damaged in the fires.
