Israeli tourism to Turkey plummets [VIDEO]

\nThe storming of the Gaza Flotilla, led to feelings of uncertainty and the repercussions continue to ripple. Israeli tourist brokers have announced an almost total freeze in tourists planning trips to Turkey. Even in Turkey Israelis holidaying there fearing terrorist attacks have cancelled tours and excursions, returning to hotels and awaiting flights home. Turkey has been a favoured tourist destination for Israelis. According to statistics from the Airports Authority, in 2008, 530,000 Israelis visited Turkey, in 2009 that number was 300,000 but this year it will fall to barely a few thousand. That will lead to a fall in over $200m to the Turkish economy. Israelis will now have the choice of either staying at home or maybe visiting similar nearby Medierranena destininations such as Cyprus or Rhodes?

Generation Why: Young American Jews and Israeli Exceptionalism

It was on Sunday nights at Temple Bet Ha\’am in South Portland, Maine — a reform congregation my mother started in 1985 — that I first learned to think and talk about Israel. For members of my religion, Israel is the physical manifestation of our endurance as a people; though a younger political entity than Joe Lieberman, the nation represents the ancient beating heart of our identity, earthen evidence of our triumph over a history of violent oppression and unending hate. Halfway across the globe, American Jews end their Passover Seders with the words \”next year in Jerusalem,\” and in Hebrew schools from Boro Park to Fairfax Avenue the children of Americans who were born alongside Israel in the aftermath of World War II have learned to love and protect the world\’s only Jewish state.

Conservative female rabbi slams ‘religious coercion’

Men occupy the senior positions of almost all religious organizations. Men dominate the executive positions in the most recognized religions – certainly the monotheistic ones. Women can perhaps aid them – best if done under the radar screen. Against this background, the movement of Conservative Judaism stands out. It chose to place a woman in its most senior post.

`Circumcise Me’ shows humor in Jewish conversions

With his long beard, side curls, black hat, coat and trousers trailing white tsitsit strings, Yisrael Campbell looks like any other Orthodox Jew.\n\nNot bad, for someone who grew up a Roman Catholic in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, under the name of Chris.\n

Another Tack: Edgardo and the quarterbacks

Fate inserts assorted unexpected subplots into our lives. Some months ago, a reader from Germany responded to a column of mine in so insightful a manner that I thought it merits acknowledgment. From there sprang forth a friendship by e-mail that still thrives. This non-Jewish German friend quickly explained that his unwavering support for Israel is by no means the bon ton of his Bavarian milieu and that his outspokenness on its behalf hardly enhances his popularity.
