Letters to the Editor

Letters to the Editor: Dennis Prager, Maccabi games, Nazi camps

Open-mindedness does not mean that we form our beliefs in a world without curation or filtration. Few Jews (or anyone, for that matter) have such an anarchistic view of knowledge. Prager (“How Open-Minded Are Jewish Liberals?” July 30) sets up this false dichotomy when he makes such narrow definitions. We have seen that there is a world beyond our own; we choose to embrace and explore it and to assert the importance of our people in it.

Letters to the Edtior: ‘Dinner for Schmucks,’ Avi Pincus, Chabad

I appreciate your recent article about the changed meaning of “schmuck” used in the movie being released July 30, 2010 (“Springtime for Schmucks,” July 9). Given my family name going back generations from southern Germany, I have another set of concerns about its use.

Letters: Zasloff, Shul, and Israel

Offended by Asarah B’Av Cover\n\nI, and many other Jews, both Orthodox and non-Orthodox, found the cover of The Jewish Journal extremely offensive regarding “What Are You Doing for Asarah B’Av” (July 16) by Jonathan Zasloff. The wording, “The time has come for us to acknowledge the dirty little secret of Tisha B’Av: The destruction of the Temple was one of the best things ever to happen to the Jewish people …” [was] … extremely offensive to our beliefs on the saddest day in Jewish history.\nI have really liked your covers in the past regarding Rosh Hashanah, Pesach, etc., [finding them] to be in good taste, and we like reading your paper. However, the Tisha B’Av statement on the cover is beyond controversial — it is just plain offensive.\nIn the future, it would be greatly appreciated and respectful to refrain from putting such statements on the cover of your newspaper.

Letters to the Editor: “I love your paper,” Israel’s PR, Rally, and Dennis Prager

\nWords of Love\n\nHey, you guys. I love your paper. Our best to you all. Come on, pass the sweet words around. As we all know, the world doesn’t get enough of them.\nP.S.: I especially enjoy and appreciate the articles of Rob Eshman, David Suissa, Jonathan Kirsch, Gina Nahai — and hello, Dennis. Keep ’em coming, people.\n

Letters to the Editor: Flotilla, Young Jews, and Prager

Can you please replace the mindless Rob Eshman (“Haiti Versus the Flotilla,” June 4) with reprints of Charles Krauthammer? Instead of aggravating the intelligent, confusing the equally naïve from his position of authority and supporting all those who intend to cause Israel harm, please publish an insightful piece instead from Caroline Glick or Charles Krauthammer like his intelligent Washington Post article on the same topic that shows how it is all really not that complicated.

Letters to the Editor: Forgiveness, Construction, Alliance, and Rabbi Savit Artison

David Suissa confuses reconciliation with forgiveness (“Eva’s Peace Process,” May 21). People and nations can be reconciled with each other — and, as part of that, agree to live in peace in the future — without forgiving each other for past wrongs (e.g., U.S. and Japan, Jews and Catholics). Conversely, people and nations can forgive each other for past wrongs but never want to interact with each other again (e.g., divorced couples). I discuss these differences — and a third, related category of pardon — in Chapter 6 of my book, “Love Your Neighbor and Yourself.” David Suissa may be put to sleep by the proposal actively to pursue a two-state solution, but if that could be achieved, most Israeli and Diaspora Jews would say dayenu, it would be enough for us.\n
