Jewlicious Conspiracy

Parents don\’t understand why 300 young Jews packed the Long Beach Alpert JCC for the Jewlicious sequel on Feb. 17. We came for food and song, complete with banging on the tables and exuberant dancing wherever there was room. At the Sunday night concert, \”Jewbilation,\” you could see the look of shock on the older generation\’s faces as we jammed to Hebrew heavy-metal songs by the Maccabees. This was not your mom\’s \”Oseh Shalom.\”

Classical Musicians’ Volume Decreases

There was a time when Jews dominated the ranks of American orchestras, and superstars like Leonard Bernstein and Isaac Stern were musical ambassadors to the world. The fact that today\’s master Jewish musicians tend to have proteges with names like Yo Yo Ma, Kyung-Wha Chung and Lang Lang is one hint that for many Jews, classical music is no longer a top priority.

L’Chaim to Kitsch!

In a dark spotlight-lit stage, a man in a long, black suit; yarmulke; and tallit slung over one shoulder fervently sings into a microphone, while a dance troupe in similar — but sexier — garb twirls behind him.
He\’s not a cantor. He\’s not a rabbi. He\’s not even religious. He is Evgeni Valevich, a performer whose repertoire includes a program of Russian Jewish music in the genre called Estrada. Estrada may be a genre unknown to Westerners, but to Russians, the term is immediately recognizable.

Israeli Superstars Rock the Diaspora

Each of the artists\’ songs have flooded the radio waves for nearly five decades, a soundtrack, of sorts, to Israel\’s many wars, casualties, celebrations, assassinations, and shifting moods — from hopeful to cynical and hopeful again.

Wandering Jew – Music to My Ears

A voice expert known for coaching singers and nonsingers, and working with deaf and autistic students and contestants for TV shows like \”Extreme Makeover\” and \”American Idol,\” Coury is unique and considered \”revolutionary.\”

Find Your Melody

This Shabbat is called Shabbat Shirah and is named for the \”Song of the Sea\” sung by Moses and the Israelites after they experienced the redemption at the splitting of the Red Sea. What was it, the rabbis asked, that evoked shirah, song, at this point and not earlier when they actually left Egypt? What propels the song to burst forth from their lips? When are we motivated to truly sing the song in our hearts?

Kosher Gospel — a Joyful Noise at Shul

And the fact that Jewish and Christian themes and theology overlap, especially in the black church — the story of Moses and the divinely aided deliverance of his people from slavery comes to mind — makes Nelson resonate that much more. All of which is fine by him.

Leonard Cohen Film Toasts Songwriter

Cohen became first an accomplished poet and then, starting with 1967\’s \”Songs of Leonard Cohen\” (which contained the oft-recorded \”Suzanne\”) a singer-songwriter. According to Ira Nader\’s Cohen biography, \”Various Positions,\” Cohen\’s Judaism has influenced his songs greatly — \”Who By Fire\” is based on the melody of a Yom Kippur prayer, \”Mi Bamayim, Mi Ba Esh,\” and \”If It Be Your Will\” is derived from a \”Kol Nidre\” phrase.

Curtain Rises on Mozart’s Jewish Tie

\”Mozart does not belong to any nation. It would be a total misunderstanding for anyone to lay claim to Mozart,\” said Peter Marboe, Vienna Mozart Year artistic director. \”That makes it obscene that the Nazis should claim him as an example of a great German artist and all the while hide his Jewish collaborators.\”
