“Eyes on the Middle East”, a two-day film festival presented by Visions and Voices: The USC Arts and Humanities Initiative, explores the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through screenings and panels with the Israeli, Palestinian and American filmmakers. Jewish Funds for Justice launches web video to inspire empathy

Recently, the nonprofit group Jewish Funds for Justice (JFSJ) launched a bipartisan Web video, “Al Tirah!” with the hope of encouraging people to vote during the midterm elections, but the organization wants the message of the film — that people should feel empathy for others, rather than fear — to resonate beyond Nov. 2.

Pluralism and Tikkun Olam come to Santa Monica, Venice

Jessica Youseffi and Sarah Shahawy, two undergraduate students at the University of Southern California (USC), discussed how the teachings of Judaism and Islam, their respective religions, obligate them to accept people of other faiths and to work toward tikkun olam.

Set in the Warsaw Ghetto, “The Survivor” follows a gang of teenagers who learn about love and the value of friendship while smuggling food to their families and arming themselves for the impending uprising. The play stars the descendants of Jewish partisans — Jordan Bielsky, grandson of Tuvia Bielski (portrayed by Daniel Craig in the film “Defiance”), and Gilli Messer, whose grandparents were part of Bielski’s Polish Jewish resistance group, which saved more than more than 1,200 Jews by hiding them in a Belarusian forest. Based on the memoir \”Survivor of the Holocaust” by Jack Eisner, the play is written by Susan Nanus and produced by the Santa Monica Synagogue Genesis Arts Council. Sat. Tikkunfest brings much-needed TLC to Pico-Robertson [VIDEO]

Volunteers spent five hours uprooting dead trees and planting new ones; setting up herb planters in front of stores; repainting curbs, poles and fire hydrants; sweeping mulch and dirt off the sidewalks; and lugging heavy garbage bags in the predominantly Orthodox neighborhood of Pico-Robertson in West Los Angeles.
