Chabad’s Shofar Factory…It’s a Blast

Quick, what\’s a kosher animal with horns that can be used to makea shofar?\n\nUh, well, everyone knows the answer to that. A ram, right?\n\nOK. Right. But name another kosher animal with horns good formaking a shofar.\n\nBzzzzzz! Your time is up.\n\nBut the several thousand Los Angeles-area day- and Hebrew-schoolchildren participating in Chabad\’s Traveling Shofar Factory know theanswer: The long, spiraling horns of the male kudu, a type of Africanantelope, are often used to make the shofarim employed in Sephardicsynagogues.

Who is Not a Jew?

In the midst of an international crisis over Who is a Jew, with Israeli police stopping Conservative and Reform men and women from praying together at the Western Wall and a small Orthodox group declaring that liberals are not practicing Judaism, it\’s good to know there is, apparently, still one thing that all Jews can agree upon: Who is not acting as a Jew.

A Legendary Friendship

Linda Deutsch and Theo Wilson liveda cross the street from each other for most of the past 21 years. They were trial reporters who met in the Charles Manson courtroom, competitors and best friends. On Jan. 17, Wilson called Deutsch four times while anxiously awaiting the limo that was to take her from her Hollywood Hills home to a CBS interview — the official start ofpromotion for her new book, \”Headline Justice,\” which had taken her 10 years to complete.
