Trish Vradenburg, TV writer who put spotlight on Alzheimer’s, 70

Trish Vradenburg, a television writer and advocate to end Alzheimer’s disease, died on April 17. She was 70.

A spokesperson for the family declined to disclose the cause of death, but in a phone interview, her husband, George, chairman and founding board member of UsAgainstAlzheimer’s, described his wife’s death as “sudden.”

Vradenburg and her husband co-founded UsAgainstAlzheimer’s, which aims to increase funding for Alzheimer’s research and discover a cure by 2020 for the progressive disease, a type of dementia, after her mother, Bea Lerner, died of Alzheimer’s in 1992. Vradenburg wrote a semi-autobiographical play about her mother, “Surviving Grace,” about a sitcom writer and her mom battling Alzheimer’s together.

Vradenburg was born Patricia Ann Lerner on May 9, 1946, in Newark, N.J. She began her career as a speechwriter in the U.S. Senate after graduating from Boston University, where she studied political science, in 1986. She was a television writer for “Designing Women,” “Family Ties” and “Kate & Allie”; published the novel “Liberated Lady”; and wrote for the New York Daily News, The Boston Globe, The Washington Post, Ladies’ Home Journal and Woman’s Day.

Judaism was important to Vradenburg, though she was a secular Jew. “She identified deeply with being Jewish and [I] converted to Judaism because she felt so deeply about her religion,” George, a former AOL executive, said. “I found this great depth in this community and purposefulness in the community.”

The couple resided in Washington, D.C., at the time of her death. They lived in Los Angeles and moved to Washington after George was offered a job with AOL. The two were married for 48 years at the time of Vradenburg’s death.

“A piece of light in the universe has gone out,” George said. “There is a brightness that will be dimmed.”

Her survivors include her husband, George; daughter Alissa Vradenburg and son-in-law Michael Sheresky; son Tyler Vradenburg and daughter-in-law Jeannine Cacioppe Vradenburg; brother Rabbi Michael Lerner and sister-in-law Cat Zavis; and four grandchildren.

A private funeral service was held April 20 in Los Angeles at Hillside Memorial Park and Mortuary. Lerner and Temple Israel of Hollywood Rabbi John Rosove led the service. A public memorial service in Washington is scheduled for May 9.

Leslie Gordon, activist for the disabled, 55

Widely known Bay Area activist Leslie Gordon died March 11 at age 55.
A native of Southern California, Gordon was born with cerebral palsy. From a young age, she broke barriers for people who have disabilities.

A lifelong wheelchair user, with speech and consequential motor challenges, she was a poet, actor and activist for the many causes she believed in, most recently participating in the Women’s March in Oakland on Jan. 21.

A decadeslong resident of Berkeley, Gordon spent her early childhood in Sherman Oaks, where her parents moved when they learned she would have the best educational opportunities there. She spent many summer vacations on Catalina Island, where her grandparents had a home. Later, she moved to a specialized residential facility, Angel View, in Desert Springs, where her leadership qualities were fostered. Recognizing her extraordinary talents, many teachers befriended and mentored Gordon into her high school years at Palm Springs High School, where she was the first mainstreamed wheelchair student.

Gordon earned a bachelor’s degree from UC Riverside, a degree in counseling from San Francisco State and a master’s degree in Religious Studies from the Graduate Theological Union.

Gordon worked as a rehabilitation counselor for people with disabilities and as an interim director for Easy Does It, an emergency attendant care agency in Berkeley. Gordon traveled as much as she was able, including a two-week trip to Israel.

In the mid-1980s, Gordon participated in a demonstration at the Concord Naval Base protesting a shipment of arms to Central America. A row of protesters in wheelchairs successfully faced down squad cars when police came to make arrests.

Gordon also was a frontline activist in the fight for the passage of the Americans With Disabilities Act (signed by President George H.W. Bush in 1990) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, providing full access to public transportation for those with disabilities.

After moving to the East Bay, she was the first woman bat mitzvah at Kehillah Synagogue. The daughter of Robert and the late Joanne Gordon, Leslie also is survived by her brothers, Bruce (Tami) and Michael (Lauri), and her sister, Julie (Juan) Yanez of Long Beach.

The Peer Program at CIL (Center for Independent Living) in Berkeley was close to Gordon’s heart. The family requests donations to this program or the charity of your choice.

Denah S. Bookstein is a friend of the deceased who was a fellow congregant at Congregation Netivot Shalom in Berkeley, and who was editing her autobiography with her. The independent news website Berkeleyside contributed to this report.

What Amy Krouse Rosenthal taught me

I first connected with Amy Krouse Rosenthal when I sent her an email in the late summer of 2009 to tell her how much I had enjoyed one of her books.

You may have heard Amy’s name lately. She was the Chicago writer whose essay, “You May Want to Marry My Husband,” became a sensation after it appeared in The New York Times in early March. Nearing the end of her journey with ovarian cancer, she composed what amounted to a dating profile for the man to whom she had been happily married for 26 years.

By the time Amy died on Monday at 51, millions of people had read the column, which, like all of Amy’s writing, celebrated the world’s small delights (taster spoons, pancake breakfasts) and the preciousness of love and life.

On Amy’s website, she called herself “a person who likes to make things.” By any measure, she made a lot of things. She wrote 28 children’s books — whimsical, creative, clever — and two idiosyncratic and inventive memoirs. She created uplifting, homemade videos (in one, she had bystanders cheer for commuters exiting a train at day’s end as if they were marathoners), delivered TED talks and loved visiting kids at schools.

All of her work inspired two reactions: (a) it made you start noticing little things and moments and  appreciating them in new ways, and (b) it made you want to be friends with Amy.

Both of those explain why I felt compelled to email Amy to tell her how, while reading a library copy of her memoir “Encyclopedia of an Ordinary Life,” I had noticed a smudge at the bottom of a page. Looking more closely, I saw that a previous borrower, after accidentally smearing mascara there, had penciled a note to future readers because she “thought it was in line with this book to write about it.”

Amy didn’t respond immediately, but a few days later, at a shivah, I ran into my friend Julie, who had relocated from Los Angeles to Chicago. Knowing that I was a writer, she immediately asked if I had heard of Amy Krouse Rosenthal. Had I heard of her? I had just written to her!

Julie told me she was helping Amy with a movie project, a sort of crowd-sourced create-a-thon called “The Beckoning of Lovely.”

When Amy finally replied to my email, she had learned through Julie that I had once been a writer at People magazine. In her note, Amy expressed — in the gentlest and least self-promoting manner possible — how wonderful it would be if People ran a story about her film project.

It was less a pitch than a prayer. “That’s my little note,” she wrote, “scribbled down in earnest, placed in a small metal tin, and buried in the ground that is cyberspace. Thanks for listening.”

I politely explained that I didn’t work at the magazine anymore, and since the movie was in its early stages, it probably wasn’t ripe for a People story just yet.

You’d think that would be the end of it, but it was just the beginning of a lengthy exchange of emails, one writer to another.

Amy asked what I’d been working on lately. I told her I had just sent out a proposal for my own memoir, about my son Ezra, who has autism. Amy kindly offered to introduce me to her literary agent. I told her that what I could really use was help with an idea Ezra himself had, for a children’s book.

She asked if I was comfortable sharing the idea. I did, and she wrote back almost immediately: “i love this idea. and i love the serendipity that just happened 10 minutes ago at lunch. i have to talk to you.”

I phoned, and Amy told me she had just come from a fruitless brainstorming session with Tom Lichtenheld, the illustrator who was her creative partner on many books. Ezra’s idea was just the kind of thing he was looking for. So she connected me with Tom.

That conversation led to a collaboration. Soon Tom was at work on a children’s picture book based on an animated video called “Alphabet House” that Ezra had created at age 12.

Two years later, my memoir about Ezra was published. And a month after that, Tom and Ezra’s book, “E-mergency!,” came out. Ezra was just 15.

On my book tour, I was about to start a reading at a suburban-Chicago bookstore when a petite woman with red hair approached me to introduce herself. It was Amy. I can still picture her, standing in the back through the whole event, a big, supportive smile on her face.

I learned later that Amy’s life was full of the kinds of coincidences I had experienced. Another mutual friend first met her when they struck up a conversation in a Miami bookstore. It turned out they were both Jewish writers who lived in the same neighborhood and belonged to the same synagogue a thousand miles away, in Chicago.

I’m not sure that these things happened to Amy more than to the average person. She was just more open to them. And more open in general: to people, to connection, to inspiration, to whimsy.

Still, it was difficult to fathom how a person could bring so many ideas to fruition. I often show my writing students a TEDx talk in which Amy explains how she utilized what she called the crevices of life, “those 20, 30, 40 minute interstices that dangle in the space between the real thing I just finished and the real thing I have to do next.”

Watching that lecture now, I am struck by one sentence Amy says: “It seems that tight parameters and small windows of time can yield the biggest results.”

They certainly did for her. In the last weeks of her life, facing, as she put it, “a deadline, in this case, a pressing one,” she penned the piece about her husband. Those 1,320 words generated far more attention than anything she had created in her five decades, making newscasts and headlines across the globe.

I couldn’t help but notice one small thing: an article under the headline, “A Wife’s Final Gift.” It appeared on page 53 of People magazine. If you scribble a note to the universe, your prayer might be answered. You just have to be open to it.

Tom Fields-Meyer, a Los Angeles writer, is author of “Following Ezra” and co-author of “Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism.” He teaches in the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program and assists individuals in writing memoirs.

Adam Krief, whose battle with cancer united community and attracted celebrities, dies at 32

Adam Krief, the cancer-stricken Jewish man from West Los Angeles whose search for a bone marrow transplant rallied the community and gained the notice of international celebrities, died on March 14. He was 32.

Donor drives to find a match for the father of three young children were held all over the United States and in France, Israel and Mexico. Several matches resulted and Krief underwent a bone marrow transplant in December. But in a tragic turn of events, his body rejected the transplant and his condition deteriorated quickly, according to Jeremy Braun, a family friend.

Braun, who went to college with Krief’s wife, Lia, said he grew much closer to Adam over the last year. He said that even in his dying days, Adam was focused on the impact his story could have on others.

“He said that Hashem gave him this to save other people’s lives,” Braun said. “That was consistent throughout. He never wanted people to be in the [national bone marrow] registry just of his sake. The drives organized for him have found matches for at least 13 others and has saved lives.”

Last summer, Krief began chemotherapy to treat a rare form of blood cancer called primary myelofibrosis. To save his life, he needed a bone marrow transplant but there wasn’t a single match in the national bone marrow registry’s 13-million person database.

A “Hope4Adam” Instagram account and Facebook page with more than 13,000 “likes” documenting his story got the word out. “Big Bang Theory” actress Mayim Bialik and reality television star Kim Kardashian West were among those who helped publicize a search for a matching donor, encouraging people on their social media accounts to join the registry and become donors.

Braun, his wife Michal and other community members rallied behind the Krief family as well. Many relatives, friends and neighbors signed up to become bone marrow donors and created a “hot meal train,” signing up and taking shifts to deliver food to the Krief household. Late night prayer sessions were arranged at the Krief’s Fairfax-area synagogue, Baba Sale Congregation.

Bikur Cholim, a Jewish medical charity organization, provided platelet donors for Adam when his hospital ran low. Platelets are tiny cells in blood that form clots and stop bleeding, and they’re often critical to fighting cancer.

People dropped by the hospital to visit Adam to play guitar and sing Havdalah songs after Shabbat. Jews from around the globe captivated by Adam’s story flooded the Kriefs with pictures, prayers and videos with words of encouragement.

“It’s been really special and takes away from feelings of isolation and aloneness,” Adam’s wife Lia said for a December story in the Journal. She also called those who helped out in any way her family’s “vigilantes” and “knights in shining armor.”

Braun said he told Adam how much his courage has meant to the community when he visited the hospital on Sunday to say goodbye to his friend.

“I told him, on behalf of entire world, I want to say thank you for inspiring us and making us better people,” he said. “Thank you for making us do good for other people. Thank you for changing the world. I told him you have my commitment that this isn’t over. We’ll continue to do blood drives for people who need it.”

Braun said so far donor drives held on behalf of Adam — an avid basketball fan, skateboarder and snowboarder—have resulted in more than 60,000 new bone marrow donors to the national registry.

“He was this young, vibrant guy and his life was turned around and taken from him in one quick year,” he said.

Krief is survived by his wife, Lia, and their three children, Lev, Joel and Luca. Services were scheduled to be held March 15.

Avrum Schwartz, Cantor at Shomrei Torah, 79

Cantor Avrum Schwartz, who for 42 years was a cantor of Congregation Beth Kodesh of West Hills, which in 1994 merged with Temple Beth Ami of Reseda and became Shomrei Torah Synagogue, died Feb. 9 after a brief illness. He was  79.

Schwartz was born Sept. 13, 1937, to Hy and Muriel Schwartz in Philadelphia. When he was 2 years old, his family relocated to Southern California, where they lived in the Fairfax District.

Schwartz performed services with the Jewish youth organizations AZA and BBG in the 1950s, and trained privately with prominent cantors in Los Angeles, his wife, Marion, said. He attended Fairfax High School and UCLA, where he was a cantor for Hillel at UCLA.

He met his future wife on a blind date. “We were fixed up by mutual family friends,” Marion said. They were married in June 1962.

Over the years, Schwartz taught thousands of bar and bat mitzvah students, and also prepped young people for a Bible contest called Chidon Tanach.

“He was very motivated by Chidon Tanach,” Marion said. “He taught junior high and high school students to participate in the Bible contest. Winners in California went on to win in New York and then went on to participate in Israel.”

Schwartz also was an authority on the Jewish theologian Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel. “He used to lecture on Heschel in synagogues and in study groups, and had one of the largest bibliographies of Heschel’s works,” Marion said.

“Cantor Schwartz always understood that his teaching was just as powerful on the tennis court or at the ice cream parlor, and sometimes even more impactful as a result of allowing his students to see him as a real human being,” wrote Rabbi Richard Camras of Shomrei Torah in an email. “His passion was infectious, his desire for his students’ success palpable. But make no mistake, his standards weren’t just high, his expectations demanding. He expected the best because that is what he expected of himself.”

While a cantor, he also worked at J Roth Bookseller in the city. After retirement, he continued to teach Hebrew and bar and bat mitzvah students, and lecture on Jewish thought and philosophy. He worked at House of David, a Jewish bookstore and Judaica shop, for the past 15 years.

“He was non-discriminatory — he didn’t only teach Jewish people,” his son Howard said. “He also taught non-Jews who were interested in Jewish thought and philosophy. He taught Hebrew from the original texts — he taught anyone who wanted to learn anything about Judaism; he made himself available. The last three or four years after closing the House of David in the evenings, he’d drive out to Lancaster and teach Christian groups about Judaism.”

In the last few years, he walked the 3 1/2-mile round trip to Chabad West Hills to read Torah for congregants, Marion said.

“He loved to read — that’s why he worked in those bookstores,” Howard said. “His knowledge of books was extraordinary. He also loved music — classical, jazz and pop music. He also loved sports — basketball, baseball, football, tennis. Being from Philadelphia, he liked the Phillies and Eagles. … When he’d be teaching at Hebrew schools, he’d play basketball with some of his students, just to show he was a regular person.”

Schwartz and his wife enjoyed trips to Israel, Spain, Italy and Morocco. Both of their sons became bar mitzvah in Israel.

Schwartz is survived by his wife, Marion; daughter Elana (Avi) Feder; sons Howard (Eydie) and David; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Esther Jungreis, Orthodox Jewish Outreach Pioneer, 80

Esther Jungreis, a pioneer in the Jewish outreach movement and founder of the organization Hineni, died Aug. 23. She was 80, according to the Vos Iz Neias blog.

A post published in October on the site Only Simchas indicated Jungreis was “in serious condition” in a hospital and fighting an infection, but did not specify her ailment.

Jungreis was born in 1936 in Szeged, Hungary, where her father was chief rabbi. A child survivor of the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, she and her family resettled in 1947 in Brooklyn, where she married her distant cousin Rabbi Meshulem HaLevi Jungreis, according to the Yeshiva World. She and her husband, who died in 1996, founded the North Woodmere Jewish Center/Congregation Ohr Torah on Long Island in 1964.

Jungreis, known universally by the honorific rebbetzin, founded Hineni in 1973 in order to bring young Jews closer to Orthodox Judaism by offering Torah classes, singles events and Shabbat and holiday services. She spoke to audiences across the United States, including at Madison Square Garden in 1973.

She was known for her work in outreach to young Jews, as well as for self-help books about a variety of topics, including marriage and relationship advice, and how to deal with challenges in life.

Jungreis drew inspiration from her experience as a Holocaust survivor to fight for Jewish continuity and against intermarriage. But her statements comparing assimilation to the Holocaust sometimes sparked controversy.

“To be a Jew is the greatest privilege,” she said at a speech in Johannesburg in 1999. “To be unaware of it is the greatest catastrophe — spiritual genocide.”

Jungreis was part of a delegation of Jewish-American leaders who accompanied President George W. Bush on a trip to Israel in 2008 in honor of the Jewish state’s 60th birthday. Among the group were Elie Wiesel, Ronald Lauder, Henry Kissinger and Sheldon Adelson.

She is survived by four children — Yisroel and Osher, both rabbis; Chaya Sora Gertzulin and Slovi Wolff — as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, according to the Yeshiva World.
