We have been having a conversation in the Jewish community about gender for more than three decades. During that time there have been some remarkable changes: the ordination of women rabbis, the proliferation of egalitarian prayer services and bat mitzvah as a rite of passage.So why do we still need to talk about gender? Because in a critical aspect, the gender gap still persists in the Jewish community.

Omigod, it\’s, like, the story of the summer. It all started in April, during the spring quarter at UC Davis. The scene is a rush event for the fledgling Jewish sorority Sigma Alpha Epsilon Pi. A heretofore unknown presence on campus, the 4-year-old, 35-member sorority had adopted a policy of nonexclusivity, inviting the few interested girls each quarter to join the mostly Jewish organization.

Intermarriage:

In September, vice presidential candidate Joseph Lieberman came under fire from many Jewish organizations for telling a radio talk show host that there is no Jewish prohibition against intermarriage.But according to a survey released this week, Lieberman\’s comments reflect the beliefs of the majority of American Jews. In short, according to the survey, \”the Jewish taboo on mixed marriage has clearly collapsed.\”
