“President Trump “indefinitely suspended” his threat of unilateral tariffs on all U.S. imports from Mexico late Friday, but the result is more relief than policy victory. Mexico will increase its migrant-control efforts, but the use of tariffs to achieve non-trade goals is bad policy that won’t stop with immigration.
Mexico will deploy 6,000 members of its new National Guard to its porous 541-mile southern border with Guatemala. This will complicate business for the human and drug traffickers who essentially control the border, since nearly all crossings occur over some 150 border miles in the west toward the Pacific Ocean. Then again, the cartels also know how to bribe and avoid the federales.
More consequentially, Mexico has agreed to accept and hold more migrants seeking U.S. asylum inside Mexico until their claims have been adjudicated. This means the U.S. will now be able to deport to Mexico most Central American families seeking asylum who enter the U.S. illegally. Mexico had been accepting only up to 300 people a day across the entire border but now there will be no limit other than the ability of both countries to handle the numbers.”
