How to Get a Gamer Geek Out of the House

[additional-authors]
November 12, 2014

My husband and I are both gamer geeks. I’d like to blame him, since he is a video game designer, and he bought me my very first MMO (Massively Multiplayer Online) game, Everquest, which I played religiously for years.

But the truth is, my fascination began shortly before I met my husband, and before people could play games in the privacy of our own home. It started in high school, when my friend Betsy and I would go to the local pizza place and play video arcade games – one in particular – while we waited for our pie to come out of the oven.

Despite the mobility of smartphone games, the fact is, many of us, myself included, often play them at home, on a tablet, while watching TV. Plus, it’s clear that most people are fairly stationary when playing smartphone games. Otherwise, they’d be walking into walls, other people, water fountains and such, and risk having the embarrassing result posted on YouTube.

So, the popularity of smartphone games hasn’t solved the age-old – or, to be more accurate, advent-of video-game-old – problem of how do you get your gamer to go outside for some fresh air and exercise.

Enter Disclaimer: Although my husband is a video game designer, he does not work on smartphone apps. Neither he nor I have any relationship with Ingress or its developer, Niantic Labs, or its parent company, Google.
