Feeling Guilty Over a Remarkable Book

I couldn’t help feeling a weird sense of guilt as I read Elly Katz’s new book, “From Scientist to Stroke Survivor: Life Redacted.”

Elly has spent most of her life struggling with physical pain. In a piece we published in The Journal five years ago, she wrote:

“I crafted this autobiographical sketch while braced in a shoulder garment that hugs my right lower rib and shoulder, which dislocate during sleep almost nightly. A neck brace cloaks my cervical spine and offers some semblance of stability my frequent shoulder dislocations demand. My right arm, a helpless child uncertain of how to carry her own weight, tugs at the base of my scalp.”

Elly had been diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS), a rare heritable connective tissue disorder that lacks a cure.

The piece was a triumph of the spirit, showing how Elly overcame never-ending ailments to thrive in academia at Harvard College. But however difficult those obstacles were, the story still had a familiar feel. We’ve all come across the cliché of a courageous soul overcoming disability.

Oct. 24, 2022 is the day Elly’s story stopped being a cliché. An unfortunate accident in the operating room made her past condition feel like a Hawaii vacation. Forget Harvard. Forget the dream of becoming a genetic scientist. Forget all those little pleasures she managed to enjoy despite EDS.

She had gone in that day for a routine set of injections to help with the cervical instability around her neck. But this is the spine we’re talking about; the margin of error is measured in millimeters. Tragically, a slip of the needle triggered a debilitating stroke and a hemorrhage that unleashed unbearable pain and paralyzed Elly’s right side.

As a way, perhaps, to create distance from her sudden nightmare, she wrote about it in the third person:

“Suddenly, she failed to locate her entire right side. The once watertight GPS system between her brain and her body was breached. ‘Mom, is my right side on the bed? Where is my right side? Can you see it? Is it there?’ Her interrogatories gushed forth, the questions colliding with each other breathlessly as her terror mounted. Her throat constricted around syllables. Her body plan felt remapped to an uncharted terrain relative to before… It jolted her like a harrowing nightmare, a plot twist crafted in a science fiction workshop.”

It’s striking how even physical despair could not sabotage Elly’s gift with words, her ability to render trauma with such cool precision.

“She could not determine where her right side ended, and the world began. Her sense of boundary dissolved. Her spine morphed from midline into a period, a hard stop, followed by a landslide of empty space. Her sense of center was catapulted to off-kilter. It still is. She lived out of context, at a remove from reference, inside the split-screen of her body.

“Her now overwrought and confused nervous system articulated a frightening fact. She forgot the geography of her right side, the drifting continents of ribs and limbs that were once paradoxically, disconcertingly, and lullingly welded to her torso. She could see it out of the periphery of her left eye. But feeling and seeing were so detached in her now. She longed to feel her right limbs against the gurney. She missed her once impervious right outline and felt like a vessel spilling out of herself, drop by drop, to the right.

“Fear overtook her, gripping her in a chokehold, its sour taste festering on her tongue. Her mother stood beside her bearing witness, a mirror of dense horror. Despair pooled in both of their eyes. Silence enveloped them inside an igloo of trauma.”

This is where my guilt comes in.

It doesn’t come from feeling sorry for Elly’s condition, although I’m sure there is some of that. It doesn’t come from the selfish guilt of feeling grateful for not being in her shoes, although I’m sure there’s some of that, too.

No, it comes from feeling guilty that her words were bringing me tremendous pleasure.

Is it callous of me to read the most heart-wrenching tale of physical pain and loss and think, “This is one of the most beautiful sentences I’ve ever read”?

Her prose disrupted my mind, confronting me with words I had never seen come together before.

“I muddle and contuse pronouns over and again throughout this narrative, as I grapple with the lack of distance between me and myself. I write through and into an experience so massive that I require techniques to capture it. Poetry, in its permutations and repetition, is the one steadfast technology I leverage for this undertaking. I am not concerned with making meaning but with coming as close as possible to it. Therefore, the source of this artwork is a hovering presence; trauma’s scale is a forest, while my ritual consists of drawing a single tree, a branch even, in lines of words that have proven to be essential lifelines.

“I glue myself together by taking a step back from the ‘I,’ not to bypass it but to earn my right ultimately to occupy it again.”

Elly’s incorrigible tenacity and love of life eventually lead her to occupy her ‘I’ again, in surprising and unlikely ways.

Her book is an homage to life through poetry, to the power of the poem to transcend the limits of language. Elly chronicles her post-Oct. 24 life in acute detail, using the lens of hundreds of poems that dance and cry on the page. The poems are divided into seven movements, like one long, epic symphony of trauma and survival.

A few notes from the first movement:

“I exist more like a vapor, spreading in all directions,

or perhaps stalwartly stationary.

It is difficult,

if not impossible,

to distinguish the two.”

From the fifth movement:

“Photons—
quanta bidding me to abide, to scavenge unwatched, primal light from my incarceration within the firm bars of disabled flesh, as robust a barricade
against being as the skin of that oak.”

From the last movement:

“Thrownness—

we exist on the perimeter of ourselves,

cows grazing outskirts of fields,

neglecting the racing evergreen heart at the center.

The random, askance universe does not catch us.”

There is a section in the introduction where Elly, overcome by her body’s devastation, feels somewhat useless and disoriented, fearing she might not have anything left to give.

Her raw, luminous prose in this remarkable book should put those fears to rest. For those of us who revere words, as well as life, this book is a pleasure festival, and I can’t help telling her that.

Iranian New Year 1404: A Year When Nature and Society Cry Out in Protest

The ruling regime in Iran continues its war-mongering policies—fueling the Gaza war to distract from domestic uprisings while supporting proxy forces like the Houthis and Hezbollah. At the same time, mass executions and environmental destruction persist across the country. Under these circumstances, the Iranian year 1404 (according to the solar calendar beginning March 21) will be a year when both nature and society rise in protest.

From Water Shortage to Freedom Shortage

Issa Kalantari, the former Minister of Agriculture, stated in a video: “The entire country’s water is controlled by one person. Due to a lack of foreign currency, water is being exported. Nothing is being done to replenish water resources. We have destroyed the country.” On Sunday, March 9, Mousavi Khansari, Deputy Minister of Energy, made an unprecedented admission: “The greatest crisis facing Greater Tehran is water. The water crisis is complex and has no easy solution.”

He explained that nearly 20 million people in Tehran and its surrounding areas rely on the Latian, Karaj, Lar and Taleqan dams. However, the drastic depletion of these reservoirs has created a deeply concerning situation. He warned that if this trend continues, Iran will face severe water imbalances and widespread shortages this summer.

A regime-affiliated expert has stated that by 1404, 97% of Iran will be exposed to severe water stress or drought. The agricultural sector is expected to shrink by at least 50%, while 10 million rural residents migrating to urban outskirts will act as ticking time bombs for social unrest.

The Dictator’s War on the Iranian People

Iran’s supreme leader Ali Khamenei has faced a critical decision: abandon the nuclear project or persist with it. So far, he has chosen the latter. With maximum-pressure sanctions in place, Iran’s oil exports are nearing zero. Even secret oil sales to China—at a 60% discount—can no longer prevent the rapid collapse of the rial, which is gradually turning into worthless paper.

In 1400, Iran’s Planning and Budget Organization projected that if sanctions were not lifted, the exchange rate of the dollar would reach 110,000 tomans in 1404 and 285,000 tomans in 1406. At the time of the prediction, the dollar stood at 28,000 tomans.

To continue funding Hezbollah, the Houthis, and other militias, the Iranian dictator refuses to comply with FATF (Financial Action Task Force) regulations. As a result, the pharmaceutical industry is expected to shrink by at least 85%. The shortage of insulin, essential medicines, and cancer drugs will push non-war-related mortality rates to catastrophic levels.

The dictator believes that between the two choices—negotiating or refusing to negotiate—negotiation is the cheaper option for him (but not for the Iranian people) to maintain his rule. However, this approach might lead to Tehran and Isfahan—home to the country’s major nuclear facilities—being engulfed in bombings and the ensuing chaos.

The Convergence of the Middle and Lower Classes

With 150% inflation, the middle class is being pushed below the poverty line, merging with the lower class to form a united opposition bloc against the regime. According to Hamid Asefi, a regime-affiliated analyst, the 90% decrease in foreign travel is fueling the middle class’s suppressed anger and desperation to flee the country—an anger that could explode at any moment.

The 300% increase in bread prices, youth unemployment surpassing 50%, and nationwide power outages—which have already forced the closure of universities, schools, and factories—will only intensify. The situation is deteriorating to a point where even a national mobilization of resources cannot resolve it.

The Collapse Scenario: From Cries to Flames

In 1404, the brutal crackdowns previously limited to “Bloody Fridays” in Sistan and Baluchestan will escalate into a “Bloody Year.”

Students and women—two driving forces behind the protests—will establish unprecedented communication networks. A historic alliance will emerge between marginalized urban dwellers, middle-class protesters, and ethnic minorities. Every violent crackdown will be like pouring gasoline on fire.

A regime-affiliated expert, Hamid Asefi, predicts that in 1404, Iran will witness 300 simultaneous protest points per day. During the 2022 uprising, there were 170 simultaneous protests. The year 1404 will be the year when uprisings align against the regime—a year when, without a doubt, rage will turn into fire.

The Rise of Resistance Units

Thousands of Resistance Units across Iran are ready to turn any spark into a nationwide uprising aimed at toppling the regime. Less than a decade ago, these units were established in every neighborhood, street, and city by the Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK), the regime’s sworn enemy. Backed by popular support, they have defied countless surveillance cameras and security forces.

In March (Esfand) alone, they carried out up to 60 anti-repression operations across Iran. Against this backdrop, the Iranian dictator’s strategy becomes clearer: Even the risk and cost of nuclear site bombings and the resulting chaos are preferable for him over retreating in negotiations. A nuclear surrender would shatter the Supreme Leader’s authority, causing even his closest inner circle to turn against him.

1404: The Year of Truth

The Iranian year 1404 will mark the end of the 45-year struggle between the Iranian people and the ruling regime. Regardless of whether the Iranian dictator chooses to negotiate with the West (at a faster pace) or refuses to negotiate (at a slower pace), his downfall is inevitable. This article is not a prediction—it is a logical conclusion drawn from 45 years of the regime’s trajectory. History has proven that no government can survive while simultaneously waging wars abroad, destroying its economy, and driving its people into hunger and thirst.

Report: Antisemitic Incidents Increased 153% in 2023 in LA County

A new report from the Los Angeles County Commission on Human Relations (LACCHR) found that antisemitic incidents in the county increased by 153% from 2022 to 2023.

The LACCHR’s released its first annual Hate Incident Report on April 4; the report defines hate incidents as “are noncriminal acts motivated by prejudice or bias against a person or group’s actual or perceived identity(ies). Hate incidents can include noncriminal verbal abuse, harassment, and display of offensive materials.” The report found that the number anti-Jewish hate incidents surged from 66 in 2022 to 167 in 2023. Antisemitic incidents were 90% of all religiously motivated hate incidents that occurred in the county in 2023, an increase from 83% in 2022.

The report also found that Muslims were the second-most targeted group of religiously motivated hate incidents, as anti-Muslim hate incidents consisted of 8% of all such incidents in 2023 and increased by 133% (from six to 14) in 2022-23. As a whole, religiously motivated hate incidents increased from 80 to 185 in that timespan (131%) and consisted of 21% of all reported hate incidents in the county in 2023.

“The most common type of offense was hate speech,” the report stated. “Hate speech increased from 77 to 184. In 2023, hate speech comprised 99% of the total and in 2022 it was 96% of the total. The other offense was noncriminal threat, which was 1% of the total in 2023, and 4% in 2022.” The report added that “incidents with evidence of White Supremacist ideology increased 76%, from 17 to 30. Middle East conflict-related incidents increased from 0 to 25, a significant increase.”

“Incidents with evidence of White Supremacist ideology increased 76%, from 17 to 30. Middle East conflict-related incidents increased from 0 to 25, a significant increase.” – From the report

The report highlighted two specific instances of reported religiously motivated hate incidents in 2023; the first occurred in January of that year in the La Brea neighborhood, where a Middle Eastern male allegedly referred to his neighbor in their apartment building as a “Jewish b—-” several times and “let’s see who is going to win, the Jewish or Muslims?” The Middle Eastern man allegedly became enraged after the apartment manager asked the man to turn the volume down on music he was blasting in the building’s common area. The report also highlighted an incident  from July 2023 in Studio City, where two Middle Eastern girls, aged 10 and 13, were allegedly derided as “terrorists” when they refused to say if they support Israel.

Overall, hate incidents increased by 35% (609 to 821) in LA County in 2023; anti-Black incidents increased by 12% and consisted of 52% of all racial and ethnic motivated hate incidents. Hate incidents against Latinos consisted of 15% of all racial and ethnic motivated hate incidents, 60% of which “included anti-immigrant slurs.” Hate incidents motivated by sexual orientation and gender increased by 24% and 53%, respectively.

“Hate incidents can be just as traumatic for victims as hate crimes, and can perpetuate systemic inequality; so all of us must report them, not accept them as ‘normal,’” LACCHR Executive Director Robin Toma said in a statement. “Understanding hate incident data along with hate crime data is a crucial new dimension for effective prevention and intervention policies and action.”
