Israeli Pharmaceutical Says It’s Developing Coronavirus Treatment
A pharmaceutical company in Israel told The Jerusalem Post on March 17 that it’s working on a treatment for coronavirus.
Kamada CEO Amir London told the Post that the company is working on what’s known as a “passive vaccine” to provide antibodies for coronavirus patients whose conditions are worsening. They are collecting plasma samples from patients who have recovered from the illness because those patients have developed viral antibodies in response to the disease.
“If patients who have recovered from the disease and are in convalescence donate plasma, there is a very good likelihood that in that plasma there are going to be antibodies,” London said. He cautioned that researchers don’t know if the treatment will be guaranteed to work because “we don’t know yet what is going to be the level of antibodies in the plasma of people who recovered from COVID-19. But based on our experience, as well as on the experience of other companies in the field, we believe there is going to be a sufficient quantity of them.”
There have been other Israeli efforts to develop vaccines. Haaretz reported on March 18 that the Institute for Biological Research discovered a “significant breakthrough” in how the virus operates and will thus lead to “better diagnostic capability, production of antibodies for those who already have the virus and development of a vaccine.”
However, the Israeli Defense Ministry denied that there was a breakthrough. “If and when there will be something to report, it will be done in an orderly fashion,” it said in a statement.
In the United States, President Donald Trump announced on March 19 that the drugs chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine, which are typically used to treat malaria and arthritis, could be effective in treating coronavirus and that the Food and Drug Administration is working on fast-tracking approval so the drugs can be available “almost immediately.”

Gal Gadot and Friends Sing ‘Imagine’ During Crisis: ‘We’re All in This Together’
Gal Gadot recruited a few famous friends to sing an A Capella cover of John Lennon’s “Imagine” that has racked up more than 4.9 million views on Instagram. In the three-minute clip, Gadot shares that the coronavirus pandemic “got me feeling a bit philosophical, knowing that this virus had infected the entire world. Everyone. It doesn’t matter who you are. Where you’re from. We’re all in this together.” She explains that she was inspired by a video of an Italian trumpet player who performed on his balcony for his neighbors. “He was playing ‘Imagine’ and there was something so powerful and pure about this video,” she says, and begins singing.
Tribe members Natalie Portman, Sarah Silverman, Maya Rudolph and Zoe Kravitz are among the participating celebs, as are James Marsden, Amy Adams, Mark Ruffalo, Kristen Wiig, Jamie Dornan, Jimmy Fallon, Norah Jones, Leslie Odom Jr. and Sia.

Coronavirus Puts Immigration of 250 Ethiopian Jews to Israel on Hold
JERUSALEM (JTA) — The immigration of some 250 Ethiopian Jews to Israel has been placed on hold because of the coronavirus.
The first 50 immigrants had been scheduled to arrive on Wednesday, according to reports, but were put on hold due to the spread of COVID-19. They all have immediate family in Israel.
Former Knesset member Avraham Neguise, who is of Ethiopian descent, told The Times of Israel in an interview that the immigrants were not informed of the postponement until the last minute and most had sold their possessions and gave up their housing because they thought they were leaving this week.
Three Ethiopian Airlines flights had been scheduled to bring the immigrants on March 18, 25 and 31. It is not known when such flights will resume.
A spokesperson from the Aliyah and Absorption Ministry told The Times of Israel that the ministry had arranged for a 14-day quarantine of the group in the north of Israel, but “after discussion with the Prime Minister’s Office, their aliyah was postponed in light of the recommendation of the Ministry of Health due to the coronavirus crisis.”
Forty-three Ethiopian immigrants arrived less than a week before the March 2 election.
The potential immigrants are part of the Falash Mura community, who claim links to descendants of Jews who converted to Christianity generations ago under duress but now seek a return to Judaism. Some 8,000 Falash Mura in Ethiopia are awaiting permission to immigrate to Israel, most of whom have some family members in Israel.

Rosner’s Torah Talk: Vayakhel-Pekudei with Rabbi Analia Bortz
Analia Bortz is a medical doctor with postdoctoral studies in Bioethics. She became the first female Latin American rabbi when she was ordained in Jerusalem at the Seminario Rabinico Latinoamericano in 1994.
We read two parashot this week: The reading of Vayakhel-Pekudei – (Exodus 35:1-40:38) – begins with Moses commanding the people of Israel to observe the Shabbat and continues to tell us in great detail about the building of the Tabernacle. Pekudei, the last reading from Exodus begins with an audit of how the contributions for the Tabernacle (the Mishkan) were used. The portion goes on to describe the completion of the Tabernacle and its assembly and concludes by depicting the glory of the lord entering it.
