Ernest J. Friedman, Former Cedars-Sinai Board Chair, Dies at 90

With great sorrow, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center mourns the passing of Ernest J. Friedman, former chairman of the board from 1986 to 1990 and life trustee. He was 90 years old.

Friedman joined with Steve Broidy Sr. and others to bring about the creation of the modern-day Cedars-Sinai. He provided invaluable leadership as chairman of the Building Committee and was a dynamic fundraiser and generous donor.

“Ernie Friedman’s leadership and commitment to fulfilling Cedars-Sinai’s mission of service to the community is a tremendous legacy that continues to inspire all of us,” Mark S. Siegel, chair of the Cedars-Sinai board of directors, said. “His impact on Cedars-Sinai, on the Jewish community, and on the overall Los Angeles community is indelible and extraordinary.”

In the words of Tom Priselac, Cedars-Sinai CEO, “Mr. Friedman personified quiet yet compelling, exemplary leadership. He was a gentle individual who was loved and respected by all who knew him. He was instrumental in making Cedars-Sinai what it is today. He played a crucial role in the founding of our Medical Center, and his faithful support of our academic programs was integral to Cedars-Sinai’s emergence as a leading academic medical center. We are grateful for his contributions and we will cherish his memory.”

Friedman fought a long valiant battle with Parkinson’s disease, according to his physician and friend, Dr. Glenn Braunstein.

“He was deeply committed to his role as a board member and life trustee,” Braunstein said. “Even when the symptoms of his disease were very bad, he would attend board meetings in a wheelchair. He never let the disease get the best of him.”

A long time resident of Westwood, Friedman was active in the Jewish community and was a former president of Hillcrest Country Club.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; daughters, Diane (Mark) Barshop and Jill (Tom) Martin; son, Dr. John (Jean Gold); eight grandchildren; and sister-in-law, Peggy (George) Polinger.

The family has requested that donations be made to the Ernest J. Friedman Memorial Fund at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
