Waiting for Jewman

Jon Stewart did his show, business as usual, on Rosh Hashanah this year. That night, when his interview guest, Meghan McCain, daughter of Senator John McCain, greeted him with \”Happy New Year,\” Stewart looked uncharacteristically nonplussed for a nanosecond, before replying, \”What? Huh? See you in Times Square tonight.\”

Parsing the ballot Propositions, from right and left

As usual in California, voters will face a slew of initiatives in next month’s election. To help sort them out, The Jewish Journal has consulted both sides of the political aisle on each proposition.

Left can’t possibly be right

If I thought, per his recent television ad, that Gov. Jerry Brown really would take on the government’s employee unions and trump their influence over the obsequious Democrats who control Sacramento — and actually restructure state government, including pension reform, I might vote for Jerry. The Democrats’ new adversary

An election year that was looking hopeless for Democrats has taken a slight turn for the better. The generic ballot measure has tightened up. Since Labor Day, President Barack Obama has marked off a new, more aggressive political stance that is perking up the ears of demoralized Democrats. The interest level of younger voters, a key Democratic constituency, is picking up. Statewide races in California are looking better for Jerry Brown and Barbara Boxer.

Jewish officials preparing for possible GOP wins

Across the United States, Jewish community professionals are honing their skills of persuasion, preparing to deal with a new crop of lawmakers unfamiliar with Jewish organizational priorities — and who could be unenthusiastic once they’re in the know.

Jewish groups fight repeal of clean energy law in Calif.

A coalition of Jewish organizations in California is waging a campaign against a ballot proposition they say would hurt efforts to wean the United States off foreign oil. Proposition 23 effectively would repeal the Global Warming Solutions Act, a California law that established a timetable to bring the state in line with environmental standards set in the Kyoto Protocol. While the United States is not party to that treaty, California has sought to go beyond U.S. requirements and reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by the year 2020.
