Young Jews Rally for Haiti

Inspired by Israel’s response to the earthquake disaster in Haiti, Jews for Judaism Young Professionals and the Barak Raviv Foundation partnered for a Feb. 17 fundraiser at h,.wood in Hollywood. More than 200 people attended the event, which doubled as a birthday party for Barak Raviv and raised $3,600 to support Jewish relief efforts in Haiti through the Orthodox Union and the Joint Distribution Committee.

Hillel 818 Salutes Educators

Hillel 818 held its ninth annual dinner celebration at Valley Beth Shalom on Jan. 28, honoring professors Donald Bleich, Zev Garber and Rita R. Werner with Distinguished Educator Awards. The dinner centerpieces, filled with needed school supplies, were donated to Community Build, an organization that helps at-risk youth. Hillel 818 represents more than 8,000 Jewish students at Pierce and Los Angeles Valley colleges and CSUN.

Three Rabbis Win Hartman Fellowships

The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles has awarded three L.A. rabbis the chance to participate in a prestigious three-year fellowship with the Shalom Hartman Institute in Israel.

Stars Shine on Friends of IDF Gala Fundraiser

The Friends of the Israel Defense Forces (FIDF) Western Region gala, held Dec. 17, 2009, at the Beverly Hilton, raised more than $5.2 million to benefit IDF soldiers through the various FIDF programs. Paul Guerin, president of the Western Region group, began the evening’s program with the announcement that he and his wife, Vera, would give $1 million, half of which will be dedicated to supporting FIDF’s IMPACT! scholarship program that provides college scholarships to former combat soldiers with limited financial means. At the sold-out gala, event chairs Cheryl and Haim Saban then said they would match the $1.6 million already raised, followed by two additional $500,000 pledges by Victoria and Ron Simms, and Erika Glazer.

Leaders Gather for a Farewell to Fishel

The city’s top Jewish lay leaders, professionals, rabbis, heads of organizations, and political leaders packed into the Cotsen Auditorium at the Skirball Cultural Center on Dec. 2 to give a giant group hug to John Fishel, who this month ends a nearly 18-year tenure as president and CEO of The Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles.

L.A. Holocaust Museum Gets Large Turnout to Fundraiser

Despite a tense giving environment, the Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust reported a 50 percent increase in attendance at their second annual fundraising dinner, which took place at The Beverly Hills Hotel on Nov. 8.
