Hillel at UCLA Gala Honors Seidler-Fellers

Hillel at UCLA honored its longtime executive director, Rabbi Chaim Seidler-Feller, and his wife, Doreen, during the organization’s 12th annual dinner gala at Sephardic Temple Tifereth Israel on May 5. Phylliss and Louis Mann were recognized for their support of Hillel with the Honorable Menschen Award, and fourth-year student Josh Khalili, a peer mentor, was tapped as this year’s exceptional student leader. Event chairs included Sara Aftergood, Laurie Levenson, Janice Kamenir-Reznik and David Suissa.

Jewish Community Foundation Hosts Grant Recipient Reception

High in the hills of Bel Air, at the Italian-style villa of Hayley and Michael Miller, an investment adviser and attorney, The Jewish Community Foundation (JCF) feted 13 recipients of its Cutting Edge Grants — which dared community leaders to “think big” — along with IKAR founding rabbi, Sharon Brous, recipient of the foundation’s first Inspired Leadership Award in 2008.

TreePeople Gets $50,000 for Reforestation

TreePeople, the environmental nonprofit committed to greening Los Angeles with trees, received a $50,000 donation on Feb. 24 from the Sempra Energy Foundation for reforestation efforts in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Hillel 818 held its ninth annual dinner celebration at Valley Beth Shalom on Jan. 28, honoring professors Donald Bleich, Zev Garber and Rita R. Werner with Distinguished Educator Awards.

Etta Israel Center Lauds Volunteers

The Etta Israel Center honored three young volunteers for their work in helping students with special needs. The Jan. 9 gala at the California Science Center recognized Esther Levine, Daniel Schwartz and Rita Miller Statman for the time they’ve put in as one-on-one counselors at camp, weekend retreats and holiday programming for children and young adults with special needs.

Biking Jewish L.A.

Boys from YULA yeshiva high school took a 25-mile bike tour of Jewish Los Angeles with their teacher, Rabbi Eliyahu Stewart, a grandfather who rides his bike 50 to 60 miles a week. The December ride took the group of ninth-, 10th- and 11th-graders through West Adams, Boyle Heights and old neighborhoods around USC.
