The Circuit: Humanitarian Torch, Schaffner Memorial Lecture, Tashlich in Venice

Joel and Rebecca Mandel received the Humanitarian Torch of Learning Award from American Friends of the Hebrew University (AFHU) during the Bel Air Affaire at the home of Brindell Gottlieb on Sept. 11. The event was co-chaired by Renae Jacobs-Anson and Dr. David Anson, Helen Jacobs-Lepor and Dr. Norman Lepor, with honorary chairs Patricia L. Glaser and Sam Mudie, and Richard S. Ziman, AFHU’s Western Regional board chair.

Tribe Life Gathering: Dave Matthews, Lakers Asst. Coach, Pepperdine Law, B’nai Emet

Musician Dave Matthews entertained guests for more than an hour during a benefit for the Tuition Assistance Fund at Heschel West Day School in Agoura. Held at the Hidden Hills home of Kim and Rob Cavallo, the Aug. 22 Backyard BBQ Concert With Dave Matthews drew 250 guests from across the United States and raised more than $190,000.

The Circuit: Paley Center for Media, ADL, Blutinger

The Paley Center for Media recalled America’s Jewish mother during the Aug. 24 event “Groundbreaker: Remembering Gertrude Berg.” Credited with creating the sitcom “The Goldbergs”— both on radio and television — Berg was also the first recipient of an Emmy for lead actress in a comedy series. Between presenting an early episode of “The Goldbergs” and selected clips from Aviva Kempner’s documentary “Yoo-Hoo, Mrs. Goldberg,” producer Gary David Goldberg (“Family Ties,” “Brooklyn Bridge”) led a discussion on Berg’s legacy, with Kempner, author Glenn D. Smith Jr. (“Something on My Own: Gertrude Berg and American Broadcasting 1929-1956”), director Arthur Hiller and actress Charlotte Rae.

The Circuit: Mazon, LEAP and ADL, NCJW-LA, Bais Naftoli

Cantor Ilan Davidson, executive and artistic director of KindredSPIRITS, presented Joel E. Jacob, chair for MAZON: A Jewish Response to Hunger, with a $30,000 check during an Aug. 9 luncheon at Spago in Beverly Hills, hosted by Barbara Lazaroff. MAZON received half of the net proceeds from the June 13 KindredSPIRITS concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall.

The Circuit: Saul and Joyce Brandman Foundation, Beth Chayim Chadishim, JFS president, Harkham Hill

L.A. philanthropist Joyce Brandman, president of The Saul & Joyce Brandman Foundation, has donated $8 million to name a new teaching laboratory building at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Edmond J. Safra campus in Givat Ram, Israel. The Saul (z”l) and Joyce Brandman Science Laboratories will provide cutting-edge research facilities for the study of chemistry, biology, physics and pharmacology at the university.

The Circuit: Arts for All

Arts for All, a program to bring arts education to school districts in Los Angeles County, received $60,000 from the Arts in Schools! Giving Circle, an initiative spearheaded by the Jewish Community Foundation of Los Angeles. The funding for the artist-in-residency program — in dance, music, theater and the visual arts — was presented at the June Arts for All progress report meeting at the Music Center in downtown Los Angeles.
