Letters to the Editor: Anti-circucision, Sarah Palin, Bin Laden

It appears that the male genital mutilation organization (MGMbill.org), Matthew Hess and Jena Troutman (“In Foreskin Fight, Even Terminology Is Being Disputed,” June 3 ) are following in the footsteps of such notorious leaders as Hitler, Stalin, King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, and Roman emperor Constantine in their quest to make circumcision illegal for males under 18 … and punishable by jail time.

Letters to the Editor: Anti-semitism, Israel Independence Day, Barack Obama, bin Laden

Danielle Berrin did the Jewish community a great service by showing why Lars von Trier should be singled out as the lone exception from a rogue’s gallery of anti-Semites, including Mel Gibson, Oliver Stone, John Galliano and Charlie Sheen (“Not Mel Gibson,” May 27). Both Berrin and Marvin Hier went beyond reactionary, black-and-white thinking to express their sense that it was ghosts in von Trier’s soul that had him behave in such a peculiar way at Cannes, and again as he sought there and in The New York Times to cajole his ghosts back into his tormented psyche. At least von Trier is struggling with his ghosts while the others have surrendered to them. Surrendering is the reason for anti-Semitism and all the other -isms that emerge from like minds.

Letters to the Editor: Israel Festival, Etta Israel, Dominique Strauss-Kahn

I was very moved and touched by Rob Eshman’s editorial last week (“I Miss Us,” May 13). I was born and raised in Los Angeles and, other than my years in Israel or New York, I spent every single Yom HaAtzmaut at a community Israel festival. Whether it was the 18K Walk for Life we had throughout the ’70s, culminating in a festival in Rancho Park, or Pan Pacific Park, or, more recently, Woodley Park, the festival is something that is a built-in part of my community identity as a Jew. I, too, loved to complain about the food, and I was always most anxious to go around to each booth and strike up a debate on an issue. I remember going to the JDL booth, and then to the Peace Now booth, and would love playing the “other side,” because the whole day felt like a living page of talmudic debates.
