A Tale of Two Liebermans.

\”Is America a great country or what? (APPLAUSE)
Yes it is. God bless America, land that we love.\”

– Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman, Los Angeles, Aug. 16, 2000

Like most American Jews, I\’m a Democrat by tradition and temperament. Still, I understand why some Jews might not vote for Joe Lieberman. Nowhere is it written that you should vote for someone just because he\’s a Jew. For some American Jews, Lieberman is too liberal. For others, too conservative. Another reason why I like him: He doesn\’t quite fit in any box.

Survivor, Shmurvivor

I\’ve been going to Jewish camps since 1985 and can lay bare my heart with the best of them. But I\’ve never attended a camp as intense as BCI, and my expectations for an epiphany are high, perhaps ridiculously so.

Israeli-Style Fitness

Maybe it\’s no Sports Club/LA in its luxury and beauty, but the Elite Sports Center at Tel Aviv University is one of the best sports clubs in Israel, with facilities and services that may make even the premier sports club in L.A. a little envious.

The Great Divide

Who are your readers, a friend asked me recently. He is not Jewish, which perhaps explains the question.I gave a pat answer: Young and old; men and women; observant and secular; liberal and conservative; survivors and their offspring; families that often trace their history through three generations. The usual; you\’ve met them all. I waved away the question.

With Power Comes Responsibility

From a Jewish perspective, this past week in Los Angeles was a tremendous success. Among other things, it tended to confirm the influential role of the Jewish community in L.A. From the parties that President Clinton attended to the panelists at the Shadow Convention who derided and dogged the very proceedings at Staples Center, Jewish organizations and activists were dominant figures.

Thoughts on the Lieberman Selection.

As a centrist observant Jew working in the secular professions, I am particularly struck by Democratic presidential candidate Al Gore\’s selection of Senator Joseph I. Lieberman as his vice-presidential running mate for the November 2000 elections.

Is Religious Diversity a Threat?

I watched with joy and admiration at the way rabbis representing such different Jewish religious orientations could become so absorbed in Torah study.

Why the GOP Lacks Jews

Studies of electoral trends in the past two decades, polls and just plain political horse sense all point to yet another big win in the fall for the Democrats among Jewish voters in the presidential and congressional elections.
