Motherhood 101: Happy Birthday Son

January 18th is a very special day. It is my son’s birthday and 2017 marks his 21st year. I have loved this remarkable human being for his entire life. In fact, I have loved him for my entire life. I wanted to be a mother for as long as I can remember, and being this young man’s mom has been the greatest joy and hardest job I have ever had. My life began 21 years ago today and I am proud beyond measure of both the person he is,  and the job I did.

My son has wanted to be an actor since he was five years old. It was at his 5th birthday actually, when he announced it was going to be his job when he grew up. At 21 he is a working actor. I see him on television regularly and it makes me cry. I bawl every time he pops up and I watch it over and over again. He did a commercial last year that aired during the Oscars and it all made perfect sense to me. He is living out his dream and it makes my heart sing to see it.

We will head to the pub tonight and have a drink together to mark the occasion. I will raise a glass to him and be grateful for all the blessings of the wonderful life we have built together. Beyond my love for him, and the fact he is my absolute favorite person on the planet, I really like my son. I enjoy his company and he makes me laugh. He is very talented and is going to bring laughter to a lot of people with his work, and that makes me happy for all of you.

It is hard to believe my little baby is now 21. He towers over me and takes care of me in many ways. He is the man in my life and I am grateful for him and all he does for me. He protects my heart, looks out for me, appreciates the life we have built, and understands the sacrifices that have been made by his single mom along the way. He loves me. We are best friends, but maintain our roles as mother and child. I am very lucky woman to be his mother.

To this amazing man, I love you. You are my sunshine and watching you not only chase your dreams, but catch them, makes my heart soar. I am honored to be your mom. You are loved by all who know you and when people tell me how wonderful you are, my heart grows. Be happy. Be brave. Be aware. Be compassionate. Take care of the planet. Take care of others. Take care of you. Happy Birthday Son! Mahashooshoo and remember to always keep the faith.
