Man dying.  Takes stock of life. Learns about himself.

The Hero treads a well-known plot without offering new revelations but that’s not say it isn’t worth watching.  Sam Elliott’s performance as Lee sets it apart with his quiet contemplation and impossible-to-forget gravelly voice.

The themes are familiar: cleansing, struggles and even an inappropriate romance, a convention that’s fodder for many self-reflective movies.  However, it’s the interesting cinematography and direction that reflect Lee’s struggles the best through use of interesting shots that avoid showing his full face.

The Hero also stars Laura Prepon, Nick Offerman, Katharine Ross and Krysten Ritter.  It was directed by Brett Haley.
