It’s Never Too Late To Expand Your Soul

As a new blogger, I stretch my lack of experience and comfort level to enter the unknown.

As a child of the 50s and 60s, daughter of Holocaust survivors, living in a new developing ‘shtedl’ in northern Toronto, privacy and self-concealment were much more desirable. Speaking of feelings, family experience and communal matters were seen as airing one’s dirty laundry.

As a female it was a double whammy –the nonverbal message clearly was “be seen and not heard.” In the privacy of one’s home, sitting around the kitchen table with a glass of tea and mandelbrot (Jewish biscotti) for dipping, my parents and their survivor friends would shmooze, share feelings and speak about the life in the new world. In their desire to spare their children stories of horror and suffering they often left an indelible mark of mysterious fantasies and enforced silence. Years of cracking open curiosity, study, and courage to speak out has shaped this late-bloomer.

So here I am entering the world of the virtual diary – sharing views and feelings – conversations in the making.

Who says you can’t teach an old dog, new tricks?
