The United Nations Security Council will debate in July the prospect of Palestine becoming a member state of the United Nations.

The discussion is set for July 26 during the Security Council’s open debate on the Middle East, Reuters reported, quoting German Ambassador to the U.N. Peter Wittig, the Security Council’s president this month.

The issue of U.S. membership for a Palestinian state is likely to come up during the U.N. General Assembly in September. The resolution, which likely will be put forth by the Arab League, will call for a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, with eastern Jerusalem as its capital.
