Top U.S. and Israeli officials exchanged a series of phone calls Thursday to discuss the situation in Egypt.

The phone calls followed President Obama’s news conference Thursday night on the volatile situation in Egypt, where the army ousted President Mohamed Morsi on Wednesday. On Friday, Islamists staged several attacks against Egyptian authorities in the Sinai, killing at least one.

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after Obama’s remarks. U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel spoke with Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon, and Obama’s national security adviser, Susan E. Rice, also spoke with her Israeli counterpart, Yaakov Amidror, Haaretz reported.
