Aaron Posner’s play “District Merchants” takes the themes of Shakespeare’s “The Merchant of Venice” and sets them in Reconstruction-era Washington, D.C., as two merchants, Antoine and Shylock, and their families struggle to forge new indentities for Blacks and Jews in post-Civil War America. What begins with a jury deliberating an open-and-shut case of murder becomes a detective story with clues that the truth may not be as obvious as it first seemed.
The tension causes each of the jurors to confront their prejudices and preconceptions about the trial, the accused and one another.
