Israel bans PA prime minister

JERUSALEM (JTA)—Israel has banned the Palestinian Authority prime minister from attending an official PA event in eastern Jerusalem.

Salam Fayyad was scheduled to visit two schools in eastern Jerusalem and attend a reception on Tuesday to celebrate PA-sponsored renovations of 15 schools there.

On Monday, a warrant from Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch was delivered to the reception hall in the Dahyat al-Salam neighborhood where the event is scheduled saying that PA events are prohibited on Israeli soil, Haaretz reported.

Fayyad has vowed that the event will go on as scheduled, though not at the reception hall, which reportedly was threatened with closure for one year if it hosts the PA prime minister.
