The 2016 elections are expected to be fairly calm when it comes to Jewish House candidates. Of the current 19 representatives, one (Steve Israel) is retiring and 17 are considered ‘solid’ favourites by the Cook report. The only Jewish Republican representative, Lee Zeldin, is considered a favourite as well (his district is ‘leaning Republican’). A strong contender that might join them is Helene Schneider, the Jewish mayor of Santa Barbara who is seeking to represent California’s 24th district. If both Zeldin and Schneider make it, there will be 19 Jewish representatives in the 2016 House.
