October 25, 2013

Our special guest this week is Rabbi James Gibson, the Senior Rabbi of Temple Sinai in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.  Rabbi Gibson, who has been the Senior Rabbi of Temple Sinai since 1988, chairs the Jewish Unity Project for the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh and co-convenes the Priest-Rabbi Dialogue sponsored by the Diocese of Pittsburgh. He sits on many community boards and serves as co-chair of the Jewish-Christian Dialogue on behalf of the Pittsburgh Area Jewish Committee. He is adjunct faculty at Chatham University and also teaches Catholic high school students through their C-JEEP (Catholic-Jewish Educational Enrichment) program. Rabbi Gibson was ordained by the Hebrew Union College and in 2010 he completed the prestigious 3-year Rabbinic Leadership Initiative of the Shalom Hartman Institute in Jerusalem, where he is presently a Rabbinic Fellow in the Institute for Jewish Spirituality.

This week's Torah portion- Parashat Chayei Sarah (Genesis 23:1-25:18)- features the death of Sarah, Isaac's marriage to Rivka, and the death and burial of Abraham. Our discussion focuses on the significance of the story of Abraham going abroad to find Isaac a wife, as well as on Isaac's relationship with his mother and the curious character of Rivka.
