A child of Massachusetts and Los Angeles, and a resident of Kirkland, Washington, Michael Lewis Goldberg was an award-winning author and professor of American Studies at the University of Washington-Bothel since 1993 and received his Ph.D. from Yale University.

He was joyfully devoted to his family, friends and students, a fierce social justice advocate, a witty raconteur, a wonderful musician, gardener, cook, and dog lover, and a proud member of Red Sox Nation. He inspired all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife Elizabeth de Forest and two sons, of Kirkland, his parents Irving and Esther Goldberg of Encino, and his siblings, Beth Goldberg and Robert Goldberg.

A local memorial service will be held Sunday, January 8th, at 11 a.m. at Temple Judea, 5429 Lindley Ave. in Tarzana.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Children's Defense Fund, FareStart or the Northwest Kidney Foundation Fund for Hemodialysis Education.
