Mount Herzl Memorial
The Mount Herzl Memorial at Israel’s national cemetery officially was opened to the public after this year’s Memorial Day, Yom HaZikaron. Officially titled “The Memorial Hall of Israel’s Fallen,” the memorial commemorates Israel’s fallen soldiers with an undulating, funnel-shaped formation of bricks that opens the hall to the sky. The spiral comprises more than 23,000 bricks, with each brick honoring an individual soldier and lighting up on the anniversary of its respective soldier’s death. The building received the 2018 Royal Institute of British Architects Award for International Excellence as one of the 20 best new buildings in the world.
