Great Honors for Graff

Waiters could barely navigate their way through the schmoozing, kvelling crowd packed into Sephardic Temple for the Bureau of Jewish Education\’s (BJE) June dinner honoring its executive director, Gil Graff.

Falash Mura Wait and Hope

Most of the more than 20,000 Ethiopian Jews left in Ethiopia today are Falash Mura, people whose families were converted to Christianity about 100 years ago, but who still identify as Jews. The Israeli government for years has been wavering on whether they are real Jews and should be brought to Israel, even though most have family there. Today there are about 85,000 Ethiopian Jews in Israel, including about 20,000 who were born there.

Krayzelburg Keeps Swim Program From Taking a Dive

Just a year ago, the Lenny Krayzelburg Swim School, headed by the four-time Olympic gold medalist, opened with fanfare and big ambitions at the Westside Jewish Community Center (JCC), a once lively place that in recent years has been seeking to reinvent itself. Living up to the center\’s dreams, as of late July, Krayzelburg now has 896 students on his roster.

The Bittersweet Meaning of Mud

There is one program in particular that embodies all of the emotionalism and meaning of machon summer: Tza\’adah. Tza\’adah is a five-day, four-night overnight trip that takes campers far from the boundaries of camp and into the nature of Northern California, where we bond with friends, while experiencing the outdoors.

Soccer on Sunday, Wickedly Wonderful

Talia Schrager loves soccer. She loves being able to run and kick and shout with other girls. Her mother, Sandra Lepson, loves the assertiveness and self-confidence the game inspired in her daughter. So with her daughter about to age out of her team, Lepson knew she had to find a way to let her daughter continue playing.

More West Los Angeles Shootings Leave Residents Outraged

Dotted by temples, community centers and parks, the largely Orthodox Jewish Crestview neighborhood and its adjacent areas in West L.A. don\’t seem to be a typical battleground for gang bangers. But residents say that is exactly what it\’s become.

Summer Tours to Israel Rerouted, But Not By Much

\”All of us that have kids in Israel are trying to make the best of the situation,\” said Jules Gutin, international director for USY, the youth arm of the Conservative movement, which has about 50 California teens in Israel this summer. \”We want the experience to be worthwhile and positive, as well as safe.\”

A Mother’s Pride

My daughter Rachel is a Jewish American girl from China. She is not the only Asian girl in her school — there are three, all adopted (two from China, one from Vietnam) — and she says she feels no different from anyone else. But among the mix of mostly Ashkenazi and Sephardic Jews that make up our community, she adds a special spice. And in her own discreet style, I believe she has helped teach her friends to be colorblind in ways that could last a lifetime.
