On the occasion of Israel’s 70th anniversary, Soviet Jewry hero Zev Yaroslavsky will be honored by Westwood Kehilla at its June 10 banquet at Sephardic Temple in Westwood. Well known as a City Councilman and County Supervisor, Yaroslavsky gained public notice in the late 1960s when, as a UCLA student, he led protests to pressure the USSR to permit the emigration of Jews. As a result of the Free Soviet Jewry movement, almost 300,000 Jews were able to emigrate to freedom, the majority to Israel.
